A New Era of Community and Compassion in Rugby League
The game of rugby league is set to bring a unique blend of excitement and compassion to the forefront, as the Australian Rugby League Commission (ARLC) and national insurer Youi collaborate on a groundbreaking fundraising initiative. This campaign, named Kick for a Cause, aims to make a significant impact on childhood cancer by raising $1 million during the NRL Magic Round in Brisbane from Friday, May 15 to Sunday, May 17.
This three-day festival is not just about football; it’s about creating a lasting legacy of support for children battling cancer across Australia and New Zealand. The initiative has garnered strong backing from all 17 NRL clubs and 11 paediatric cancer centres in both nations. These centres are strategically placed within communities where NRL clubs are based, ensuring that the campaign reaches those who need it most.
How the Funds Will Be Used
The money raised through this campaign will be directed through the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Foundation and the Starship Foundation. These organizations support institutions that provide specialist clinical care, cutting-edge research, and essential support programs for young cancer patients and their families. This partnership ensures that every dollar contributed makes a tangible difference in the lives of children and their loved ones.
Youi has made a generous commitment to the cause, pledging $1,000 for every successful converted try and penalty goal at Magic Round. Additionally, they have doubled that amount for every field goal scored over the three days of action. This shows the company’s dedication to making a meaningful contribution to the fight against childhood cancer.
The Scope of Childhood Cancer
Every year, approximately 1,000 children and teenagers are diagnosed with cancer across Australia and New Zealand. On average, three families receive this devastating news every day. This highlights the urgency and importance of initiatives like Kick for a Cause, which aim to provide better care, comfort, and hope for these families.
ARLC Chairman Peter V’landys AM has strongly supported the campaign, urging the rugby league community to come together for something greater than the scoreboard. He emphasized that every child fighting cancer deserves the best possible care, comfort, and hope. V’landys also thanked Youi for their support and encouraged fans attending Magic Round and those watching from home to get behind this important cause.
A Shared Vision
Youi CEO Nathaniel Simpson echoed this sentiment, highlighting the company’s belief in the power of community. He stated that supporting strong communities means giving back and investing in causes that affect the lives of everyday Australians. Simpson added that cancer and serious illness impact countless families, which is why supporting Aussies through moments that matter is at the heart of what Youi stands for.
Expanding the Impact
Beyond the goalposts, all the clubs have linked directly with their local paediatric hospitals to coordinate a broader program of community engagement. This includes player hospital visits and exclusive inner sanctum experiences for young cancer patients. These activities provide children in the toughest fight of their lives with moments of joy and connection with their football heroes.
