A Journey of Hope and Resilience
Sarah Danh, a 27-year-old labor nurse from Texas, has been on a challenging journey since she fell ill during her dream honeymoon in Japan. Her family has shared moments of hope as they continue to support her through a difficult recovery.
The couple, Sarah and her husband Luke Gradl, 28, embarked on their honeymoon on April 7. However, only two days into their trip, Sarah suddenly became unwell and was rushed to the emergency room. Gradl described the sudden onset of symptoms, including jaundice, vomiting, fever, body aches, and severe hepatic encephalopathy—a serious decline in brain function caused by liver disease.

After being admitted to the ICU, Sarah was flown back to Texas on a flight that lasted over 20 hours. This journey marked what her uncle, Khang Le, described as the “most critical part of her recovery.” Upon landing, an MRI revealed devastating news: doctors informed her parents and Luke that Sarah had suffered a stroke before returning home, resulting in what appeared to be severe bilateral brain damage.

Despite this heartbreaking news, Sarah’s family continued to support each other and hold onto hope for her recovery. The following day, another MRI provided a glimmer of hope that some of the damage may be reversible, although it would take time to fully understand her condition and recovery.
Signs of Improvement
In recent days, Sarah has shown signs of improvement. Her uncle shared on Facebook that while still on a breathing machine, she has begun taking a few weak breaths on her own. He described Sunday morning as the most hopeful day since they first learned of her illness.
Le also mentioned that Sarah has given small but meaningful signs that she is aware of her family’s presence. She gently squeezed her mother’s hand and faintly nodded when asked if she could hear. These moments brought tears of joy and relief to her parents and the entire family.
A GoFundMe page created to aid Sarah’s recovery and her family has received over $187,000 in donations as of Monday evening. The fundraiser shared an update stating that Sarah is making good progress in her recovery but remains in critical condition.
Continuing the Fight
Sarah’s family and her new husband have asked everyone to continue praying for her as she continues her journey toward recovery. Gradl, who is currently training to be a pilot, expressed his deep love for his wife and the challenges they face.
“I just want her to be stable enough for our evacuation that is being coordinated through AirMed because it is a long, risky flight that must be done to get her home,” he said. Gradl emphasized that they continue to put their faith in God and the medical staff caring for Sarah.
“I love my wife with all my heart and this is a test like no other.”
As Sarah continues her recovery, her family remains hopeful and grateful for the support they have received. Their story serves as a reminder of the strength and resilience of the human spirit, and the power of love and community in times of need.
