Hazlewood’s Unbelievable IPL Breakthrough

A Dominant Performance by Hazlewood and Kumar

In a thrilling display of pace and precision, Australian fast bowler Josh Hazlewood and his teammate Bhuvneshwar Kumar played a pivotal role in leading the Royal Challengers Bengaluru to a convincing nine-wicket victory over Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The match saw Delhi Capitals collapse for their third lowest total, with Hazlewood and Kumar taking 4-12 and 3-5 respectively.

Delhi Capitals had previously managed to score 264 against the Punjab Kings, but they were unable to replicate that success two days later. The defending champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, capitalized on this opportunity, securing a comfortable win.

Bengaluru’s victory was a direct response to their previous home loss against Delhi, as they reached 77 for one in just 6.3 overs. Virat Kohli, the only player to surpass 8000 IPL runs, achieved another milestone by reaching 9000 runs with an unbeaten 23. Kohli’s performance was instrumental in sealing the win, as he hit two consecutive sixes against Thangarasu Natarajan.

Devdutt Padikkal also contributed significantly to the run chase, scoring 34 not out off just 13 balls. His aggressive batting included two sixes and two fours in Kyle Jamiesen’s single over.

“Even I am surprised at how the game went,” said Bengaluru captain Rajat Patidar, expressing his astonishment at the team’s performance.

Key Moments from the Match

Hazlewood and Kumar delivered a masterclass in swing bowling and yorkers, dismantling Delhi’s top order. The home team was reduced to 6-8 within the first 23 balls of the game. Impact player Abishek Porel was the highest scorer for Delhi with 30, helping them surpass their previous lowest total of 66 from 2017.

Kumar’s perfect yorker dismissed debutant Sahil Parakh early in the innings, while Hazlewood took the wickets of Lokesh Rahul and Sameer Rizvi off consecutive deliveries. Delhi lost half their side in just 16 balls, with just five runs on the board when Kumar found the edges of Tristan Stubbs and Patel.

Hazlewood completed the demolition of the top order by getting Nitish Rana to glove a catch in the fourth over to wide slip.

Hazlewood’s Performance and Outlook

Hazlewood, 35, has faced several challenges this season, including injuries that kept him out of Australia’s Ashes series against England and led to his withdrawal from the Twenty20 World Cup. However, he showed no signs of rust in this match.

“When that ball was nice and hard, it was tough to bat,” Hazlewood remarked, highlighting the conditions that favored his bowling.

He added, “Last year we summed up conditions quickly and adapted our games. Feel like we are hitting our straps again at the right time.”

Standings and Implications

With this win, Bengaluru maintained their position in second place on the table, having secured six wins from eight games. Delhi, on the other hand, dropped to seventh place after the defeat.
