Smith endorses Bellamy’s bold Origin decision as Storm struggle

Queensland Maroons and the Right Decision by Craig Bellamy

Cameron Smith, a legendary figure in rugby league, believes that Craig Bellamy made the right decision to step away from his role with the New South Wales team. This move comes as Melbourne Storm continues to face a challenging period, having lost six consecutive matches. Bellamy, who had previously been involved as a coaching consultant, has now decided to focus solely on the Storm, a choice Smith supports wholeheartedly.

The decision was initially reported in February before the season started, when Wide World of Sports’ The Mole mentioned that Bellamy would not continue as a coaching consultant. Now, two months later, this has been confirmed. The recent loss to the Rabbitohs left Bellamy feeling “the most embarrassed I’ve ever been in my footy life,” highlighting the gravity of the situation.

A Focus on Club Preparation

Smith shared his thoughts on Nine’s 100% Footy program, reflecting on Bellamy’s previous roles with the Blues in 2008, 2009, and 2010. He recalled how Bellamy often felt that his duties with the Blues took away from his club preparation. Smith emphasized that the Storm is currently in a difficult position, and he believes Bellamy’s decision to return his full attention to the club is the right one.

“Their club is in a really difficult spot right now so I think he’s made the right decision to go back and focus fully on the Storm,” Smith said.

Unfamiliar Territory for the Players

Smith described the current form of the Melbourne players as “unfamiliar territory.” He noted that the team is “flat” and “low on confidence,” which is unusual for the squad. To illustrate his point, he recounted the 2012 season when his team also faced a losing streak of five games. During that time, Bellamy had a meaningful conversation with him after a match against the Dragons at WIN Stadium.

“I remember the fifth consecutive game we lost against the Dragons down at WIN Stadium and Craig Bellamy came walking out into the field and met me post-game and looked at me and said ‘I don’t know where to go from here’,” Smith explained.

Simplifying Football

What followed was a change in approach. Bellamy and Smith focused on simplifying their football strategy. They stopped worrying about complex plays and instead concentrated on making tackles, completing sets, and working hard. This shift led to a turnaround in their performance, and they didn’t lose another game for the rest of the season.

“I don’t think we lost a game for the rest of that season once we stripped everything back and really simplified the part of our football and preparation,” Smith added.

Training Standards and Game Day Performance

Smith also highlighted the comments from Cameron Munster and Harry Grant, who were confused about why their training standards weren’t translating to game day performance. While this may seem concerning, Smith viewed it as a positive sign.

“If their training and preparation hadn’t been good, then there’s a lot of issues going on. They just need to stick at it,” he said.

Looking Ahead

As the Storm prepare to face the Dolphins on Friday night at Suncorp Stadium, the focus remains on regaining their form and confidence. With Bellamy fully committed to the club, there is hope that the team can find its rhythm and turn things around.
