Max Verstappen Shows Signs of Return to Form
After a series of public frustrations about the new car regulations and his performance at the start of the Formula 1 season, Max Verstappen might be returning to his best form. The break caused by the cancellation of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grand Prix could have benefited both Verstappen and Red Bull, as the four-time champion secured second place in Monday’s Miami Grand Prix.
Verstappen dominated the first two sessions of qualifying, only narrowly missing out on pole position to Mercedes’ rising star Kimi Antonelli. His performance has been a significant turnaround from earlier in the season, where he openly expressed that he wasn’t enjoying the new car regulations.
Positive Changes and Improved Performance
After qualifying, Verstappen shared his positive feedback on the changes made during the five-week break. He told Sky Sports:
“For me it’s been two things. For sure it’s the car not being great in the previous races, but also on my side I never felt comfortable with the layout of the car. I think over those last few weeks the team has been pushing flat out to try and bring upgrades to the car and trying to make me feel a lot more comfortable with a lot of things in the car and it really pays off.
I mean, I feel more in control of the car again and I can push a bit more again and the upgrades are working and to be on the front row is way better than I expected heading into this weekend.”
Kimi Antonelli Makes History
Kimi Antonelli’s performance in qualifying was impressive, as he claimed pole in three consecutive races. This achievement places him in the company of Formula 1 legends like Michael Schumacher and Ayrton Senna, who also had their first three pole qualifying runs in a row.
Oscar Piastri Faces Challenges
In contrast to Verstappen and Antonelli, McLaren’s Oscar Piastri struggled during qualifying. The Australian barely managed to qualify for Q1 after a shaky start and ultimately finished seventh in the Miami race. He faced significant difficulties in sector two, losing time and falling down the starting grid.
Sky Sports commentator David Croft expressed disappointment for Piastri, stating, “Big disappointment for Oscar Piastri,” as qualifying concluded.
Other Key Qualifiers
Charles Leclerc secured third place, with Lando Norris following closely behind in fourth. Norris took home Saturday’s sprint race, finishing ahead of Antonelli in second and Piastri in third.
Looking Ahead to the Miami Grand Prix
With the five-week break now behind them, all eyes are on the upcoming Miami Grand Prix, which will take place from 6am on Monday. The race promises to be an exciting event, with teams and drivers looking to capitalize on the improvements made during the break.
As the season progresses, the performances of key drivers like Verstappen, Antonelli, and Norris will be crucial in determining the overall standings. With the new car regulations and ongoing developments, fans can expect an intense and competitive race in Miami.
