Klaasen’s 2027 World Cup Advice for South Africa

A Veteran Star’s Impact on the Field

Heinrich Klaasen, a veteran cricketer, made headlines with an impressive performance of 65 not out at the Wankhede Stadium. This innings was crucial for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) as they managed to surpass the 244-run target set by Mumbai Indians and secure another victory. Klaasen achieved his runs in just 30 balls, hitting seven boundaries and four sixes.

Kevin Pietersen’s Call for Klaasen’s Return

Former England captain Kevin Pietersen has strongly recommended that the South African cricket board consider including Klaasen in their squad for the 2027 ODI World Cup. On his social media platform, Pietersen expressed his thoughts, stating, “South Africa have never won a cricket world cup! There should be a phone call this morning, from the South African cricket board, to Heinrich Klaasen, to ask him if he can rejoin international cricket and be a central figure in their campaign to try and win their first ever world cup which will be in South Africa next year.”

The Upcoming World Cup

The current World Test Championship (WTC) title holders are set to co-host the event along with Zimbabwe and Namibia in late October and November next year. However, the 34-year-old Klaasen surprisingly retired from international cricket in June 2025. He mentioned that he wanted to spend more time with his family and focus on playing in various franchise cricket leagues.

Stellar Performance in IPL 2026

Klaasen has been showing exceptional batting form in the IPL 2026 season. After his powerful knock against MI, he moved up to second place in the list for most runs in the IPL 2026 season. So far, Klaasen has scored 414 runs from nine games, with an average of 59 and a strike rate of 157, including four half-centuries.

Since IPL 2023, the former Proteas star has consistently scored over 400 runs each season. His best season with the bat was last year, where he scored 487 runs from 14 games, with one fifty and one century. With his current form, it is evident that Klaasen could achieve a 500-run season in the league.

Will the Veteran Reconsider His Decision?

During a recent interview, Klaasen revealed that he had considered making a comeback to international cricket. He even discussed the possibility with Aiden Markram, but the plan did not materialize. This has effectively ruled out any chances of seeing the Pretoria native back in the national team.

In the 60 ODIs he played, Klaasen scored 2141 runs, including four centuries and 11 fifties, with an average of 43. He also represented the national side in four Tests and 58 T20I games.
