Leapmotor B05 Ultra Set for Australian Launch
Chinese automotive brand Leapmotor is preparing to introduce its most performance-oriented model yet, the B05 Ultra, in Australia. This comes after the regular B05 model is expected to launch later this year. The B05 and B05 Ultra are unique within Leapmotor’s lineup in the country, as they are hatchbacks rather than SUVs, and are designed to offer a blend of high-performance capabilities.
Unlike many other models in Leapmotor’s range, the B05 and B05 Ultra are aimed at delivering an engaging driving experience. The brand is leveraging its advanced battery and motor technology from China while incorporating European-style ride and handling characteristics. This combination is intended to create a vehicle that can compete with established models like the Cupra Born.
The 160kW B05 has already been confirmed for an Australian launch later this year, with the B05 Ultra now under consideration for a subsequent release. Francesco Giacalone, the Global head of Brand Strategy, Product and Marketing at Leapmotor International, shared insights into the potential launch of the Ultra model.
“The Ultra, at this moment, we are studying. It is really interesting feedback we are getting from the media testing the car, (and we’re) deciding when and if, region by region,” Giacalone said.
He noted that while the C-segment hatchback segment isn’t universally popular, the Ultra version could serve as a strong brand statement. “So, we are seriously considering it everywhere.”
Performance Enhancements
The regular B05 produces 160kW and 240Nm of torque, but the B05 Ultra steps up the game with 180kW and 320Nm. This increase results in a significant improvement in acceleration, reducing the claimed 0-100km/h time from 7.9 seconds to 5.9 seconds. For context, this performance level is comparable to the current VW Golf GTI, which also achieves the same 0-100km/h time.
One of the key aspects of the B05 Ultra is Leapmotor’s adaptation of a European ride and handling program. This program will be the global standard for the vehicle outside of China. It involves more than just tuning; Leapmotor is adjusting component layouts to deliver a sportier driving experience.
“It drives completely different,” Giacalone told CarsGuide. “We have, after some assessments done in November, lowered the hook point of the suspension arms on the rear, and lowered the centre of gravity, and the car has totally changed behavior. So if you drive a BO5, European versus BO5 for China, totally different.”
Future Plans and Pricing
The Leapmotor B05 is set for a launch in Australia towards the end of 2026, with the B05 Ultra now expected – though not yet confirmed – to follow. While pricing details are still pending, the entry-level 160kW B05 in China starts at approximately $25,000 AUD. This suggests that the B05 and B05 Ultra could offer competitive pricing in the Australian market.
Leapmotor’s approach to the Australian market reflects a strategic effort to position itself as a serious contender in the electric vehicle space. By combining Chinese innovation with European engineering, the brand aims to provide consumers with a compelling alternative to existing models. As the B05 and B05 Ultra prepare for their launches, the focus remains on delivering performance, reliability, and value.
