Mazda’s New SUV on the Way?

Mazda is reportedly considering the introduction of a new model that could serve as a bridge between two of its most popular SUVs. While details remain speculative, recent developments suggest the Japanese automaker may be preparing for an expansion of its lineup.

The company has filed a trademark application with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) earlier this year for the name Mazda CX-40. Notably, the CX-40 name was already trademarked in Australia back in 2019, indicating that Mazda may have been planning for this model for some time.

Trademarks, however, do not always guarantee that a vehicle will eventually be produced. They are often used to secure a name and prevent other manufacturers from using it. Mazda has not officially confirmed whether the CX-40 will become a reality, but the move suggests the automaker is exploring new possibilities in its product range.

If the CX-40 does make it to production, it is likely to sit between the CX-30 and CX-5 in Mazda’s current lineup. This positioning would place it in a mid-size SUV segment, potentially appealing to customers looking for something more spacious than the CX-30 but not as large as the CX-5.

This is not the first time Mazda has introduced an SUV with a number in its name. The company previously launched the CX-4 from 2016 to 2025, which was exclusively sold in China. The CX-4 was based on the same platform as the previous-generation Mazda 3 and first-generation CX-5, but featured a lifted station wagon body style. If the CX-40 follows a similar path, it could adopt a more swoopy, wagon- or coupe-like design.

Mazda may also draw inspiration from the Mazda Vision X-Coupe concept, which was unveiled at last year’s Tokyo Motor Show. This concept car showcased a sleek, sporty design that could influence the direction of the CX-40.

In addition to the CX-40 trademark, Mazda has also registered trademarks for the names CX-10 and CX-20 in several countries, including Australia. These names could hint at future models, though nothing has been confirmed yet. However, Mazda did reveal the Vision X Compact concept at the Tokyo Motor Show, which previewed what appears to be a next-generation Mazda 2 with subtle crossover SUV design elements.

Mazda has also made significant investments in its production facility in Thailand. The company plans to build a new compact SUV there, which could feature a hybrid powertrain or even electric vehicle (EV) technology. This move aligns with Mazda’s broader strategy to expand its presence in the EV market while maintaining its commitment to traditional internal combustion engines.

The potential introduction of the CX-40 highlights Mazda’s ongoing efforts to adapt to changing consumer preferences and market demands. With the growing popularity of SUVs and crossovers, the automaker is likely looking to strengthen its position in this segment.
