Urgent Baby Formula Toxin Alert

A2 Milk Company Recalls Baby Formula in the US Over Toxin Concerns

The A2 Milk Company has issued a recall of several batches of its baby formula in the United States after a dangerous toxin was found in the product. This action follows the discovery of cereulide, a highly potent toxin, in three specific batches of A2 Platinum USA-labeled infant milk formula.

These recalled products were only available for sale in the United States and have been removed from shelves. The presence of cereulide poses a serious health risk, especially to infants, as it can cause severe symptoms within a short time frame.

Symptoms and Risks Associated with Cereulide

Cereulide typically causes symptoms such as nausea and vomiting, which usually appear between 30 minutes and six hours after exposure. While these symptoms may resolve on their own, they can be particularly concerning for infants due to their underdeveloped immune systems. Dehydration is a significant risk, and parents are advised to seek immediate medical attention if any symptoms develop.

The affected formula was distributed through various channels, including the A2 Milk Company’s official website, Amazon, and Meijer stores. A total of 16,428 units of the product were sold in the US.

Financial Impact on the Company

The recall has had a noticeable impact on the company’s stock value. Following the announcement, shares of the Auckland-based company fell by 12% on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX), dropping from $7.27 to $6.49.

Despite the recall, the A2 Milk Company has stated that no cases of illness or harm have been reported so far. This suggests that while the toxin was present, it may not have caused any direct harm to consumers at this point.

Assurance for Other Markets

In a statement, the company’s managing director and chief executive, David Bortolussi, reassured parents and caregivers that other markets, including Australia, are not affected by this isolated recall. He emphasized that the issue is limited to the US market and does not pose a threat to products sold elsewhere.

Details of the Affected Batches

The following batches of the A2 Platinum USA infant milk formula have been recalled:

  • Batch number 2210269454 with a use-by date of 15/07/2026
  • Batch number 2210324609 with a use-by date of 21/01/2027
  • Batch number 2210321712 with a use-by date of 15/01/2027

Customers who have purchased any of these products are strongly advised to stop using them immediately. They should either dispose of the product or return it to the place of purchase.

Continued Monitoring and Safety Measures

The A2 Milk Company has confirmed that all products sold outside the United States are unaffected by this recall. The company is likely to continue monitoring the situation closely and providing updates as necessary.

Parents and caregivers are encouraged to stay informed about the recall and take appropriate action if they have purchased any of the affected batches. Ensuring the safety of infants remains a top priority for both the company and its customers.
