Giggs Pushes Carrick to Recall Hojlund

Ryan Giggs has expressed his support for Michael Carrick to take on the role of permanent manager at Manchester United. He believes Carrick is the right person to lead the club forward and has encouraged him to give a lifeline to one of the club’s most controversial players in recent years.

United have already secured their place in next season’s Champions League with three games remaining, thanks to a remarkable turnaround in performance under Carrick, who took over as interim manager in January after Ruben Amorim’s departure. Despite not making any new signings during the transfer window, Carrick has managed to turn the team’s fortunes around, playing a style of football that aligns more closely with the club’s traditional values.

“I think a strong personality and just the quiet way he’s gone about it,” Giggs said on Rio Ferdinand Presents. “The way we played against Manchester City, that’s the United way—pass and move, pass and move. When you get into the ball into the dribblers, you can make things happen, that’s when you can take risks.”

“Man United has always been about no player being quicker than the ball. You saw that in the little triangle in the City game, and that was after just a few days of training. Let’s see what he can do with a pre-season and getting the players he wants.”

If Carrick is appointed as the permanent manager, he will face difficult decisions regarding several players currently on loan. Among them are Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford, two high-profile names currently enjoying temporary spells elsewhere. Giggs believes both England internationals would benefit from leaving the Theatre of Dreams for now.

However, in the case of Rasmus Hojlund, Giggs feels the Denmark international deserves another chance. He believes the 23-year-old was unfairly treated during the tenure of Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim.

“He’s got big decisions with the likes of Marcus, Hojlund, Sancho—all these players,” said Giggs.

When asked if he would keep any of this trio, he added, “Maybe Hojlund, maybe. I thought he was unlucky because he was the only centre forward at the club. Everyone expected him to come in and do great. I think Sesko gets more chances and scores more goals. But you never know—if you’ve got two young, hungry centre forwards up front and say fight it out. You see at United that’s always been a strength. I say training is harder than the games. If you’ve United centre halves at one end marking Sesko, it’s going to be competitive.”
