Four-year-old and three others hospitalized after dog attack

A four-year-old child and three adults have been injured in what is believed to be a dog attack in Middlesbrough. Emergency services were called to Marshall Avenue, located in Brambles Farm, after reports of a Malinois dog attacking four individuals on Sunday afternoon.

A 15-year-old boy, a 34-year-old man, and a 36-year-old woman have been arrested on suspicion of being responsible for a dog that was dangerously out of control, resulting in injuries. They are currently being questioned while the investigation continues. Police have taken the dog into custody as part of the ongoing inquiry.

The child and the three adults have all received medical attention at the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. Authorities are working to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Mike Dalton, from Cleveland Police’s Middlesbrough response team, stated: “Once the report was received, officers swiftly attended the area and located and seized the dog. As part of the investigation, three people have been arrested and will be questioned while officers work to establish exactly what took place. I would like to appeal to anyone who has information or footage related to the incident to come forward and get in touch.”

Residents who have concerns about the incident are encouraged to speak with police officers. The Malinois breed is known for being a herding dog, often described as stubborn, protective, and hardworking. However, there have been concerns raised about their potential for sudden aggression.

PETA has highlighted an issue with this breed, noting that they may have a gene variant linked to sudden, unpredictable aggression. This can lead to episodes of rage that resemble seizures, but instead of losing consciousness, the dogs may lash out violently at those nearby.

Despite these concerns, Malinois dogs are not classified as a dangerous breed and are not banned. In fact, they are used by some police forces, including the Metropolitan Police, in service roles.

In 2024, the breed made headlines after a family pet attacked a seven-month-old baby girl in Coventry, resulting in her death. The family’s dog was later euthanized. Earlier in the same year, 19-year-old Jamie-Lea Biscoe was killed in a dog attack in Long Hide, Essex. The dog involved in the attack was not a banned breed.

Specialist officers were deployed to secure the scene and take the dog away. A 37-year-old man from Dunmow was arrested on suspicion of being in charge of a dog that was dangerously out of control and caused injury leading to death.

Those with information about the incident are urged to contact the police. For more updates, readers can stay informed through local news channels.
