Legal Dispute Over Film Depiction of Police Officers
Two officers from the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, Jason Smith and Jonathan Santana, have taken legal action against Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s production company, Artists Equity, over the Netflix film The Rip. The lawsuit claims that the movie’s portrayal of fictional police officers led to reputational harm for the real-life officers.
The Rip, a thriller, follows a group of Miami-based detectives who discover $20 million in cartel cash during a raid, which leads to a series of events involving greed, betrayal, and panic. According to the lawsuit, the real-life officers were not pleased with how their experiences were depicted in the film.
The legal complaint argues that the film was heavily inspired by a real event that involved Smith and Santana in 2016. During this operation, they dealt with illegal substances and seized over $21 million in cartel cash, which differs from the amount shown in the movie. Although the officers are not named in the film, they claim the details are specific enough to directly link the fictional characters to them.
A key point of contention is the film’s “inspired by true events” label. The Miami setting further fuels the officers’ frustration, as they believe audiences could reasonably assume the reckless behavior of the fictional detectives was based on them. This concern was heightened after scenes depicted the characters crossing ethical lines, including a violent confrontation with a DEA agent.
In addition to the content of the film, the officers also argue that the movie’s advertising contributed to the issue by framing the story as rooted in actual police work. Their attorneys reportedly reached out to the filmmakers shortly after the film’s January 2026 release, but the production team dismissed the concerns, stating that neither officer was identified by name. As a result, the dispute has escalated into a full courtroom battle over issues of reputation and implication.
Demands for Public Correction
Beyond seeking financial compensation, the lawsuit includes requests for punitive damages, attorney fees, and a public correction that would be attached to the movie itself. Specifically, Smith and Santana want a visible disclaimer clarifying that the characters and misconduct depicted in The Rip are not connected to them.
Ben Affleck and Matt Damon have not publicly commented on the lawsuit, though their schedules are already filled with other projects. The legal challenge adds another layer of complexity to their already busy careers.
Busy Schedules of the Actors
Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are far from idle. Affleck is currently preparing to direct Animals for Netflix, another crime-themed project that has already generated attention before filming begins. Meanwhile, Damon is juggling major studio projects, including Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey.
In addition to these commitments, Damon is expected to return for Ocean’s 14 as Linus Caldwell, although this depends on the script. With so many productions underway simultaneously, the legal issues surrounding The Rip have become just one more complication in an already packed schedule.
