A Mother’s Intuition Leads to Life-Saving Diagnosis
When a one-year-old in Colorado refused to stop crying, her parents’ instincts proved crucial in uncovering a serious medical condition. Jovi Darpino’s parents, Chesney and Nick, noticed their daughter was no longer the cheerful child they knew. Her constant crying and illness raised concerns, leading them to seek medical help.
Initially, the family thought Jovi had contracted a gastrointestinal virus. However, after following their pediatrician’s advice, they took her to the emergency room at Children’s Hospital Colorado. There, doctors delivered a shocking diagnosis: Jovi had a mass in her brain that required immediate attention.
The news came as a devastating blow to the family. As their daughter’s condition worsened, doctors warned that Jovi might not survive the night. The situation escalated rapidly, with multiple instances of CPR being administered to save her life. Throughout her treatment, Jovi was placed in a medically induced coma and underwent numerous MRIs, along with feeding and breathing tubes.

The tumor was causing severe complications by blocking fluid from entering her spinal cord. Doctors had to drain the fluid from her brain to alleviate the pressure. Nick described the experience as “the worst thing you can imagine.”
However, there was a silver lining. The tumor was non-cancerous, and it was successfully removed during an 11-hour operation on April 6. The Darpino family spent over a month at the hospital, crediting their parental instincts for Jovi’s survival.
“We were told we were at the perfect place at the perfect time to save her life,” Chesney said.

To help with the financial burden of Jovi’s treatment, a friend of the family started a GoFundMe campaign. The fundraising page highlighted the emotional and financial strain the family faced, emphasizing that no parent should have to go through this alone.
Chesney and Nick are both educators in Colorado Springs. They have another child, Arlo, who is five years old and remained by Jovi’s side throughout her treatment. Now in recovery, Jovi has been discharged from the hospital and will continue with physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy.

Doctors plan to monitor Jovi closely through monthly MRIs and specialist appointments. The family expressed their gratitude to the doctors and nurses at Children’s Hospital Colorado, calling them “angels on earth” for their quick actions that saved Jovi’s life.
“We wanted to give more spotlight on the doctors and nurses at Children’s Hospital who are angels on earth and the reason our daughter is alive,” Chesney wrote on social media. She also thanked God for the miracles that helped their family through this difficult time.
The Darpino family continues to focus on Jovi’s recovery, with her parents optimistic about her future. Their story highlights the importance of parental intuition and the critical role of medical professionals in saving lives.
