Jonny Bairstow’s century saves Yorkshire from crisis

Jonny Bairstow’s first century as Yorkshire captain proved crucial in helping his side recover from a difficult position after Surrey’s Matthew Fisher dismissed England Test team-mates Joe Root and Harry Brook at Headingley.

Fisher, who has been included in a 15-man England squad for the upcoming first Test against New Zealand, was selected ahead of Essex’s Sam Cook. His performance on the day saw him take three wickets, leaving Yorkshire in a challenging position at 121 for four. Root was dismissed leg-before for 44, while Brook edged to first slip on the charge, scoring just seven before Bairstow and opener Adam Lyth stepped up to rescue the innings.

The pair formed an unbroken partnership of 241, guiding Yorkshire to a strong total of 362 for four by the end of the day. Lyth ended the day unbeaten on 138, while Bairstow, who recently surpassed 15,000 first-class runs, remained not out on 116. Bairstow took over as White Rose skipper at the start of last season and continued to show his leadership on the field.

James Rew, who recently received an England call-up, had a notable performance with 86 runs for Somerset against Sussex at Taunton. Ollie Robinson returned to form with respectable figures of 13-5-28-1 following his national team recall.

After a disappointing opening innings last week, Rew moved back to the middle order and delivered a bold innings, hitting six fours and three sixes before being caught on the boundary off Tom Haines. Tom Abell continued his impressive start to the summer with an unbeaten 74, while Tom Lammonby contributed 73 runs. This helped Somerset secure a strong position after two consecutive defeats this month.

Ben Stokes added to Zak Crawley’s struggles as Kent gained control against Durham at Beckenham. A century from teenage opener Ben Dawkins and veteran batter Sam Northeast proved vital for Kent. Crawley, who was recently dropped by England due to a poor start to the season, scored 30 before mistiming a shot to Stokes, who then bowled Matthew Potts.

Dawkins, aged 19, finished the day unbeaten on 181, while Northeast was out for 141. Stokes, who opened the bowling for Durham last week, claimed one wicket for 70 runs.

Josh Tongue was dominant as Hampshire scored 152 for six in just 45.3 overs at the Utilita Bowl. However, it was Fergus O’Neill who made the most impact, taking four wickets for 32 runs for county champions Nottinghamshire.

Worcestershire faced a dramatic collapse, falling from 101 for two to 107 for six before managing to reach 270 all out. Matthew Waite’s 77 from number seven was key in their recovery against Lancashire at Southport. The Red Rose ended the day without losing a wicket.

Ben Kellaway’s 139 and captain Kiran Carlson’s 85 were instrumental in Glamorgan’s total of 341 for eight against Warwickshire. Leicestershire also put up a strong performance, scoring 333 against Essex, who finished the day on 10 for one.

Gloucestershire, currently at the bottom of Division Two, were all out for 154 after Ben Sanderson took five wickets for 47 runs for Northamptonshire at Bristol. The visitors responded with 28 for two. Meanwhile, Middlesex were bowled out for 177 at Lord’s, and Derbyshire closed the day on 106 for four.
