A Life of Challenges and Triumphs
Sheryl Crow, a renowned singer-songwriter, has had a life filled with both personal and professional challenges. Her journey has been marked by heartbreak, health struggles, and the pursuit of her passion for music.
A Difficult Week
Crow’s life took a dramatic turn when she ended her engagement to Lance Armstrong. The couple had been together for two years, but their relationship came to an end in 2006. However, what made this week even more difficult was that Crow also received a breast cancer diagnosis and learned that Armstrong was seeing a “really famous actress.” This combination of events left her feeling devastated.
“I was engaged. I had three beautiful step-children. I wanted to have kids with this person. We split. In the same week that we split, I got diagnosed with breast cancer, and I found out he was seeing a really famous actress,” Crow shared on Bobby Bones’s The Bobbycast podcast.

Dealing with Grief and Treatment
The experience forced Crow to confront her emotions and undergo a grueling nine months of radiation treatment. She described the emotional toll of this period, saying, “I really felt like I went through about nine months of radiation and grieving and anger.”
Her oncologist, who she described as having a stoic demeanor and resembling her grandmother, offered some wisdom during this time. “I’ve had a thousand women come in with breast cancer, don’t miss out on the lesson,” she said, which helped Crow reflect on her life and priorities.

Reassessing Life’s Direction
This challenging period prompted Crow to reevaluate her life and what truly mattered to her. “It took my life screeching to a halt to get to a place to go, ‘Okay, who am I? And why am I doing what I’m doing? Do I love what I’m doing? What am I supposed to be doing?’” she reflected.
A Complex Relationship
Crow’s relationship with Armstrong began in 2003, around the time he and his first wife, Kristin Richard, announced their divorce. At the time, he had three children, a son and twin daughters. He later explained that he broke up with Crow because they were “up against her biological clock” and he was not ready to have more children.

Despite the challenges, Crow eventually went into remission and adopted two sons: Wyatt, now 19, and Levi, 16. She has also spoken about the impact of her previous relationship, particularly regarding societal expectations placed on women. “You know there’s one thing about a woman and the biological clock,” she said, “we get blamed a lot for the demises of relationships. ‘Well, her biological clock’ or ‘She wanted kids and I wasn’t ready for that.’ And it’s such, I don’t want to say a sexist thing, but it does feel like that.”
A Career Fueled by Passion
Before becoming a household name, Crow worked as an elementary school teacher in St Louis, Missouri. However, she decided to pursue her dream of a music career in California. There, she met and worked with Michael Jackson, which catapulted her into the spotlight. She became a backing singer on the pop star’s 18-month global Bad tour and later appeared in his music video for “Dirty Diana.”
Crow’s career has been incredibly successful, with over 50 million albums sold worldwide and nine Grammy awards to her name. Some of her most popular songs include “All I Wanna Do,” “If It Makes You Happy,” and “The First Cut Is The Deepest.”
