Warriors lock in key half, another near deal

Key Players Set to Secure Futures with New Zealand Warriors

The New Zealand Warriors are preparing to make two significant re-signings in the coming weeks, ensuring stability in their halfback positions for years to come. This move comes as Luke Metcalf is set to leave the club at the end of the season after being granted a release. His departure creates an opportunity for several players to step up and take on greater responsibilities.

Chanel Harris-Tavita, Te Maire Martin, Jett Cleary, and Luke Hanson will now be central to the team’s future plans. With Luke Hanson already linked to the Gold Coast Titans, and Harris-Tavita joining Martin on the off-contract list, there has been a growing urgency for the Warriors to secure new deals for key players.

This urgency intensified when it was revealed that Harris-Tavita had caught the attention of the North Queensland Cowboys. However, the Cowboys opted to sign Jake Clifford, who will continue to partner Tom Dearden in the halves for the foreseeable future.

In response, the Warriors’ coach, Andrew Webster, expressed his desire to keep Harris-Tavita with the club. Club CEO Cameron George confirmed this stance during a recent appearance on Sport Nation Radio in New Zealand, stating that Harris-Tavita would not be leaving anytime soon.

George also shared positive news regarding ongoing discussions with Martin and his management about the player’s future. He hinted that significant updates could be announced in the next few days.

“We’ve been having those discussions over the last week or so,” George said. “I’m hoping that we’ll have very good news in the next few days or this week,” he told Sport Nation.

Impact of Injuries and Player Development

Luke Metcalf, who was expected to play alongside Tanah Boyd for the remainder of the season following Boyd’s ACL injury, has been overlooked despite being in recovery. He was also not selected for the NSW Cup, indicating that the club may be looking to move forward without him.

Te Maire Martin, who came off the bench against the Broncos when Boyd was injured, is now poised to continue the Warriors’ strong performance alongside Harris-Tavita in the halves. Meanwhile, Luke Hanson is expected to see more first-grade action this year, while Jett Cleary appears to be getting closer to making his debut.

Jye Linnane remains the other half in the squad under contract, providing additional depth and competition within the position.

Looking Ahead

As the Warriors prepare for the upcoming season, the focus is on securing their halfback line and developing young talent. The potential re-signings of Harris-Tavita and Martin are crucial steps in ensuring the team’s long-term success. With the right mix of experience and emerging stars, the Warriors are well-positioned to maintain their competitive edge in the NRL.
