Essendon Faces Harsh Reality After Disappointing Loss
Essendon has once again found themselves at the bottom of the ladder, marking only the third time in the 21st century that they have ended a round in such a position. This came after a heartbreaking loss to Richmond on Friday night, where everything seemed to go wrong for the Bombers.
The game saw Essendon lose five players to injury, with Sam Durham (concussion), Andrew McGrath (broken jaw), Matt Guelfi (hamstring), Archie May (ribs), and Jye Caldwell (ankle) all going down during the 18-point defeat at the MCG. The Tigers managed a scrappy 10.14 (74) to 7.14 (56) victory, leaving the Dons in a difficult spot.
This loss has placed significant pressure on the club and coach Brad Scott, especially considering that Richmond entered the game with 26 available players on their list and had only one win this season. Despite the circumstances, Scott acknowledged the challenges faced by his team.
“It’s probably hard to separate the performance from the circumstances,” Scott said after the match. “But in terms of the game, we were on the hop the whole time, given that right from the start, we had to shuffle the deck chairs a fair bit.”
The injuries have certainly been a disaster for Essendon, pulling them back into the injury vortex that plagued their 2025 campaign. With 19 players now on the injury list, the situation is similar to that of Richmond.
Despite being favorites against a depleted side, the Dons emerged from the game last on the ladder for the first time since 2016. Scott expressed his disappointment but also recognized the effort put in by the players.
“It’s obviously extremely disappointing not to get it done, but there are always things that you think, OK there’s positives, but it’s hard to talk about positives at the moment for us,” he said. “We’re in a situation that we don’t want to be in, and we’ve got to keep fighting.”
However, not everyone is convinced that the injuries are the main issue. Essendon champion Matthew Lloyd believes the Dons had opportunities to win the game but were outplayed by a rebuilding side.
“Richmond were the better side,” Lloyd told 3AW. “They were two goals up at half time. They just held their lead all day and they are ahead of the Bombers a fair way with the talent that they’ve got.”
Lloyd added that the Dons’ performance was not good enough, despite the injuries. “I don’t think they can use injuries as an excuse. They had their chances and were just not good enough. Very sloppy by foot.”
The loss has raised questions about the future of Scott’s tenure as coach. Geelong champion Jimmy Bartel believes the club will not make a snap decision until they see how the next fortnight plays out.
“They’ll see how these three weeks play out and probably make a decision based on how it plays out,” Bartel said.
Scott took over as Essendon coach in 2023 following the sacking of Ben Rutten. He currently has a contract in place for the 2027 season, but the pressure is mounting on him to deliver results.
With the upcoming games against West Coast and Carlton, the Dons need to find a way to turn their season around. Fans are watching closely to see if the team can bounce back from this latest setback.
