Starmer Pushes TNT for Free Champions League Final Broadcast Between Arsenal and PSG

Keir Starmer Calls for Free Access to Champions League Final

Keir Starmer, the leader of the Labour Party, has publicly urged TNT Sports to reverse its decision to charge fans for watching the Champions League final between Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). The match, scheduled for May 30 in Budapest, Hungary, is set to be the first time in the competition’s history that fans in the UK will have to pay to watch the final.

TNT Sports, the current rights holder for the competition in the United Kingdom, has been criticized by UEFA for its decision to charge viewers for all three European finals this season. These include the Europa League final, which took place on Wednesday, where Aston Villa defeated Freiburg 3-0.

Starmer, an Arsenal supporter, emphasized the importance of making the final accessible to all fans. He stated on social media: “Football should bring people together, not shut them out.” He added that the decision to charge for the final was not just about watching Arsenal in a historic match but was a broader issue affecting hardworking people who should not have to pay for a subscription to view the game.

“This is bigger than wanting to watch Arsenal in this historic final. It’s bigger than one club,” Starmer said. “Hardworking people shouldn’t have to fork out for a subscription to watch this match.”

TNT Sports’ Response

In response, a spokesperson for TNT Sports highlighted the value of their offering: “It has been a privilege to bring UEFA club competitions to sports fans across the UK throughout the season. Having three Premier League clubs reach the finals shows the strength of English Football and something that we are proud to continue to support.”

They added that all three UEFA finals this year would be available for just £4.99, which is the price of a month-long subscription to HBO Max. This includes access to a wide range of entertainment content on the service.

TNT Sports, formerly known as BT Sport, had previously made the finals free to watch since acquiring the rights in the 2015-16 season. Before that, ITV had shown the final since the competition’s rebrand in 1992. However, the Champions League Final is not considered one of the protected ‘crown jewels’ that must be broadcast for free, according to government regulations.

A Shift in Broadcasting Rights

The move by TNT Sports marks a significant shift in how the Champions League final is being presented. Prior to 2015, the final had been broadcast free of charge on ITV, which held exclusive rights since the competition’s launch in 1992. That arrangement lasted until 2003, after which ITV shared the rights with Sky Sports until 2015.

UEFA has expressed frustration over the decision, with sources suggesting it goes against the spirit of the contract, which requires broadcasters to make every effort to ensure the finals are free to watch.

The Significance of the Match

Arsenal is aiming to win the Champions League for the first time in their history, while PSG looks to defend their title. The match promises to be a thrilling encounter between two strong teams.

Additionally, Crystal Palace will compete in the Conference League final against Rayo Vallecano on May 27 in Leipzig, Germany. This adds to the excitement of the European football season.

Conclusion

As the date of the Champions League final approaches, the debate over accessibility and affordability continues. With the decision by TNT Sports to charge for the final, fans are calling for a reconsideration of the policy to ensure that football remains a sport for everyone.
