Djokovic Faces Hostile Crowd at French Open
Novak Djokovic faced a challenging encounter during his second-round match at the French Open, where he was met with loud boos from the crowd. The third seed managed to secure a hard-fought victory over Valentin Royer, but the experience was far from pleasant.
Djokovic expressed his frustration with the noise from the spectators during crucial moments in the match. He repeatedly voiced his displeasure, particularly when the crowd’s interruptions affected his focus. A notable moment came when Djokovic saved a break point in the fourth set. In response, he raised his finger to his lips, signaling the crowd to be quiet. This gesture was met with loud jeers from the home fans.

The 39-year-old tennis legend also struggled with the intense heat on Court Philippe Chatrier, which made the match even more demanding. Despite these challenges, Djokovic managed to win the match with a score of 6-3, 6-2, 6-7 (7), 6-3, after three hours and 44 minutes of play.
Reflecting on the match, Djokovic said, “It’s a very important victory. The conditions are difficult for players. I had chances in the third set, and it was my fault because I was twice a break up. It’s normal to have a few complications. I hope I won’t play against any other French players. That’s enough. I’ve played two matches and I feel like I’ve played two weeks.”
He continued, “When I had a match point in the tie-break, I was too passive, and he took advantage. It’s very, very hot, but I’m happy to get through.”
A Strong Record Against French Players
Djokovic extended his impressive streak of victories against French players by defeating Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in the first round. This marked his 30th consecutive win against a French opponent. However, the match was not without its challenges, as Djokovic dropped a set in the process.
In the second round, Djokovic faced Valentin Royer, who was ranked 74th and aiming for his first top-10 win. Initially, Djokovic had little trouble against Royer, as he looked to reach the third round for the 21st consecutive year. However, the match proved to be more competitive than expected.
Djokovic twice led by a break in the third set, but Royer quickly responded each time, much to the delight of the home crowd. The French player even managed to save a match point and win the tie-break, showcasing his resilience and determination.
Ultimately, a single break in the fourth set was enough for Djokovic to secure the victory. However, the match was not without its dramatic moments, as Royer saved three additional match points, including one with a stunning half-volley.
A Test of Resilience
Despite the challenges, Djokovic demonstrated his trademark resilience and ability to perform under pressure. His victory not only highlights his skill on the court but also his mental strength in overcoming adversity.
As the tournament progresses, Djokovic will need to maintain this level of performance if he hopes to make a deep run at the French Open. With each match, he continues to prove why he is considered one of the greatest players in the history of the sport.
