Ivan Cleary Backs Dylan Edwards After Origin Selection
Penrith Panthers coach Ivan Cleary has expressed his support for Dylan Edwards following the fullback’s omission from the State of Origin Game 1 squad. This decision came as Laurie Daley opted to select James Tedesco instead, with Liam Martin making a return to the NRL level in an effort to secure a spot in Game 2.
Daley’s choice at fullback was one of the most significant decisions heading into the Origin opener. Edwards had played all three games in the previous series, but this year, Daley went with Tedesco, who has been in excellent form over the past two seasons. His work around the ruck and strong connection with club teammate Reece Robson were key factors in the decision.
Daley also considered the relationship between Nathan Cleary and Edwards, which has led the Panthers to four NRL premierships. However, despite being left out, Edwards is determined to prove himself on the club stage when the Panthers face the Warriors in the final game of the round.

Coach Cleary acknowledged that Edwards’ omission was a tough call, but he believes the fullback will use it as motivation. “It’s a contentious selection and obviously a close one,” Cleary said. “Dyl has been playing awesome. Everyone knows that, so I guess it gives him a little bit more fire. That would be good, but if he just keeps playing the way he is, I will be happy.”
Edwards has been in exceptional form this season, scoring nine tries in 11 games for Penrith. Many believed his exclusion was harsh, especially considering he seemed to have regained the form that earned him his debut in 2024.
Opportunity for Players to Back Up
The Panthers are in a favorable position, playing the last game of the round. Several players, including Brian To’o, Isaah Yeo, Ivan Cleary, and Casey McLean, are named in the Blues squad. The team will face the Warriors on Sunday at CommBank Stadium.
Cleary emphasized that he will give the players every opportunity to back up, depending on the outcome of their Origin clash. “This week is a little different. The game is in Sydney, and we have a Sunday night game, so it’s probably the best chance for the Origin stars to back up,” he said.
“Sometimes you are given little or no chance. As usual, we will have a bunch of different plans. The (Origin) game will be played on Wednesday, and we will work out what we are going to do after that.”
Warriors Face Tough Challenge
The Warriors are currently two points behind the Panthers on the table and 47 points behind in points difference. However, a win over the Panthers would be a significant statement for Andrew Webster’s team, who have dealt with several season-ending injuries in the past two weeks.
