Kanye West-linked exec sues to reveal anonymous critic

The Rise of Reputational Warfare in the Music Industry

In a dramatic turn of events, a music industry executive has taken legal action against an anonymous individual he claims is using technology to wage a campaign of “reputational warfare” against him. This executive, Larry Jackson, played a pivotal role in reviving Kanye West’s career after the rapper’s controversial public support for neo-Nazism. Now, Jackson is seeking a judge’s intervention to unmask the person behind two websites that have launched a smear campaign against him and his company.

The complaint, filed in New York State Supreme Court, targets two websites: larryjacksonexposed.com and gammaexposed.com. These sites accuse Jackson of various unethical practices, including streaming fraud, artificially boosting sales numbers, and secretly paying for press coverage. Jackson, who was previously the creative director at Apple Music, is being referred to as “Larry Scammson” by these sites, while his media company, Gamma, is labeled as “Scamma.” The allegations suggest that Jackson and Gamma are running a “fraudulent enterprise,” with claims that they inflated sales figures for Kanye West’s album “Bully” through bot-generated purchases.

According to the complaint, Gamma, which Jackson co-founded in March 2023, is facing financial difficulties. It is alleged that Jackson has spent $90 million of the $100 million he raised from investors on personal expenses such as private flights and a “grandiose lifestyle.”

Jackson argues that the websites are engaging in a new form of corporate interference and harassment, leveraging bot networks to spread false narratives without accountability. He emphasizes the growing issue of digital stalking and organized libelous attacks across online platforms, which have caused significant harm to artists and labels.

The complaint highlights that Gamma was initially seen as a high-tech alternative to traditional record labels, handling artist development, recording, distribution, and marketing. A positive story about Jackson and Gamma was published by Bloomberg, but this was soon followed by the launch of the two websites and a coordinated social media campaign aimed at discrediting Jackson.

The websites falsely claim that Jackson lied to Gamma’s staff about a contractual provision with Kanye West, suggesting that he had signed an agreement that would drop West if he made racist or antisemitic remarks. Additionally, the sites allege that Gamma was laundering money for Mariah Carey and inflating her album sales to make their financial reports look better.

The complaint also states that several artists, including Usher, Snoop Dogg, Rick Ross, and French Montana, have left Gamma due to dissatisfaction with Jackson. The websites appear to have been created using an AI-powered content platform, with efforts to hide the IP address of their hosting server and anonymize their creators.

Once the websites went live, a coordinated social media amplification campaign emerged on X (formerly Twitter), with hundreds of accounts posting links to the sites within a 12-minute window. A Reddit account named “Judith_Ackee” was identified as posting similar content, although it was later banned by Reddit.

Despite the backlash, the media took notice, with Page Six publishing an article that cited the websites, indicating their influence within the music industry. Jackson and Gamma have hired forensic investigators to identify the perpetrators behind the sites and the bot network, but they have been unsuccessful so far.

The complaint concludes that the reputational warfare has caused substantial harm to Gamma and Jackson’s reputation, business relationships, and revenue. The ongoing nature of the defamatory content remains a concern, as the websites continue to be accessible.

Jackson is seeking compensatory and punitive damages, along with attorneys’ fees and court costs. He also requests an injunction to force the unidentified defendant to take down the sites and cease any further defamatory statements about Gamma.

As the situation unfolds, the music industry watches closely, aware of the potential implications for artists and labels facing similar challenges in the digital age.
