Senne Lammens pushes Man United to unleash summer spending spree

Manchester United’s Need for Squad Reinforcement

Senne Lammens, the goalkeeper for Manchester United, has acknowledged that the club must strengthen its squad this summer to meet the challenges of Premier League and Champions League football next season. The team faced a difficult challenge in their recent goalless draw against Sunderland, where key players such as Casemiro, Benjamin Sesko, and Manuel Ugarte were absent due to injury.

The club is concluding what has been their shortest season in over a century, having played just 40 games after exiting Europe and both domestic cup competitions early. However, despite these setbacks, United have secured their place in next season’s Champions League, which Lammens believes will require a deeper squad to compete effectively.

‘Yes, of course, it’s a very hard league and next year will be a hard programme,’ said the United goalkeeper. ‘So you want to get as many, or you want to have people in there who can come in when it’s needed.’

Lammens highlighted that the current squad possesses a lot of quality, but he emphasized the importance of having backup players to handle injuries and other challenges that may arise. He noted that the presence of new additions to the team has been crucial in supporting the existing players.

‘I think personally we have a lot of quality already in the squad this year. But, of course, next season is going to be a lot, and you also want to include injuries and stuff that can happen just like today. A couple of guys injured, a couple of guys who normally always play. So those guys who are coming in and helping us out as well are very important.’

He added that the team is aiming to build a strong and competitive squad for next season while also recognizing the progress made during the current campaign.

Maintaining Momentum Through the Season

Lammens dismissed the idea that United’s performance at the Stadium of Light was affected by the fact that they had already qualified for the Champions League. He pointed out that the head coach, Michael Carrick, had encouraged the players to finish the season strongly.

‘I don’t really think so, personally. For me especially not,’ added the Belgian. ‘The manager warned us and he made the point that these last couple of games are very important for us because we want to finish as high as possible and with as many points as possible.’

He explained that how the season ends can significantly impact the team’s mindset for the following campaign.

‘We also know how you end the season is also the feeling you get for the new season. So we want to build on that and keep the momentum going.’

Lammens also addressed the possibility that some fans might believe the players were already thinking about their summer holidays. He argued that the team’s preparation and attitude during the match showed their commitment.

‘I almost get offended when people are accusing that because the way the players have prepared for the game, the way they left the changing room and faced a tough game, it’s fine. I think if we weren’t in a good headspace and motivated, I think we lose the game today. Sunderland played really well at certain points of the game and made us work for it.’

He emphasized that the pride and responsibility of playing for a great club serve as a strong motivation for the players.

‘The fact that our pride in ourselves and each other and the responsibility of playing for this great club and being part of it, is certainly motivation and focus. It’s not the reason whether we’re going to be brilliant or maybe we’re going to have a performance where it comes a little bit more challenging.’
