The Passing of John McClain, Co-Executor of Michael Jackson’s Estate
John McClain, a key figure in the music industry and co-executor of Michael Jackson’s estate, has passed away after complications from a fall. The Los Angeles-born music executive was hospitalized following an accident at his Malibu home, where he sustained a broken arm and required medical attention. McClain spent several days in the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center before passing away on Tuesday afternoon.
McClain, who worked alongside John Branca as co-executor of the late singer’s estate, had been managing the financial and creative aspects of the Michael Jackson legacy for over a decade. Sources described him as “vibrant and creative right up until the end,” though he had faced health challenges in recent years. His death marks the loss of a respected and influential figure in the world of Black music.
A Legacy of Influence and Innovation
McClain was known for his deep understanding of music and his ability to spot talent. He began his career in the mid-1980s as the director of A&M Records’ Black music division, where he played a pivotal role in shaping the careers of artists like Janet Jackson. He helped launch her groundbreaking 1986 album Control and contributed to the success of Rhythm Nation, two of the most iconic albums of the decade.
His work extended beyond Janet Jackson. McClain was instrumental in signing early 90s sensations such as Marky Mark & The Funky Bunch and Rico Suave singer Gerardo. He also played a crucial role in advancing Dr. Dre’s career during his time at Interscope Records, helping to launch the rapper’s 1992 album The Chronic.
Contributions to the Michael Jackson Legacy
McClain’s most notable work came after he was appointed co-executor of Michael Jackson’s estate in 2009. Alongside John Branca, he oversaw the management of the estate’s finances and creative projects, including the Cirque du Soleil show Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour, the 2009 concert film This Is It, and the 2023 biopic Michael.
He also produced several related film projects, such as Michael Jackson’s Halloween (2017), Michael Jackson: Slave to the Rhythm (2014), and Bad 25 (2012). These projects helped keep Jackson’s legacy alive and introduced his work to new generations of fans.
Personal Background and Musical Roots
McClain’s journey in music began early. Both of his parents were involved in the industry—his father owned a club, and his mother was a pianist. He started taking piano lessons at the age of three and later transitioned to guitar after being inspired by Jimi Hendrix. Before becoming an executive, McClain performed as a guitarist for notable artists such as Lionel Richie, Gladys Knight, and Diana Ross.

Professional Philosophy and Vision
McClain was known for his strong belief in the artistry of music. He once told a newspaper that his goal was to “bring back the art form” in the business. “I’m not the kind of guy who needs to take a survey to figure out whether a song is good or not,” he said. “I’m a musician. I want to create music that makes the hair on your forearms stand up.”
His philosophy influenced his work with artists and helped shape the direction of many successful projects.

Legal Challenges and Lasting Impact
In recent years, McClain and Branca have been involved in legal battles with Paris Jackson, Michael Jackson’s daughter. However, their efforts to manage the estate were recently praised by a judge, who acknowledged the significant wealth they helped build for the estate’s beneficiaries.
At the time of Michael Jackson’s death in 2009, he was in severe debt, owing $500 million to 65 creditors. His passing, which was ruled a homicide, stemmed from acute propofol intoxication administered by his personal doctor, Dr. Conrad Murray. Murray was later convicted of involuntary manslaughter.

A Lasting Legacy
McClain’s contributions to the music industry and his role in preserving Michael Jackson’s legacy will not be forgotten. His work helped ensure that the King of Pop’s influence continued long after his passing.
