Will Day’s Return: A Sign of Hawthorn’s Future
After a long and challenging period of recovery, Hawthorn star Will Day made a triumphant return to the senior side, marking a significant moment for the club as it aims for its next premiership. His performance in the recent match was not only a personal victory but also a testament to his resilience and dedication.
Day’s journey back to the field has been anything but straightforward. Over the past few seasons, he has faced multiple injuries, including a shoulder dislocation and a navicular foot issue. These setbacks have limited his game time, but they have not diminished his impact on the team. Despite being on the field for just 62% of the games, Day still managed to make a substantial contribution, recording 18 disposals, five clearances, three tackles, and seven score involvements in the latest contest.
“I hit Gunners on a lead, and it gave me so much joy. Teammates saw me get up and about too. Just little things you don’t think about when you’re in the run of a full season,” Day shared after the win. “You’re playing with your best mates. Getting after it and going at it as hard as they can. And when you get a result like we did, to be able to celebrate together, it’s pretty special.”
A Carefully Planned Return
The Hawks’ medical and coaching teams worked closely with Day to ensure that his return was both safe and effective. The club developed an elaborate plan during the pre-season, focusing on his recovery and ensuring that when he came back, it would be for good. This strategy included a combination of rehabilitation programs, careful monitoring, and a gradual reintroduction to training and match play.
“I was really confident. That was a plan all along, and because of the shoulder, I could keep running the whole time, so I’m probably the fittest I’ve been,” Day explained. “I got back into contact work, had several weeks in full training. I felt really confident going out there.”
Day’s approach to his recovery was highly disciplined. He became deeply focused on the process, emphasizing routine and consistency. “I was obsessed with the grind a little bit. I’m really process-driven. I was before, but I took it to a whole new level. The power of routine. I had the same breakfast. The specifics aren’t important, but getting into the club early, doing the little things I can nail, and now I’m prepared for the session ahead.”
Coach’s Perspective
Hawks coach Sam Mitchell expressed his satisfaction with Day’s performance, highlighting the importance of managing his workload carefully. Despite Day’s eagerness to contribute, Mitchell emphasized that the club would not push him beyond what was necessary.
“I am pleased with Will, I think he played 30 seconds more than he was meant to, so we had a bit of a chat about that after the game,” Mitchell joked. “When (Sam) Flanders hurt himself… ‘Daysy’ quickly ran off, and I think that was so he could keep his minutes safe and not have to waste them on the carry off.”
Mitchell also noted the team’s diligence in ensuring that Day did not overextend himself. “We were pretty diligent with making sure that he didn’t play too much footy, we’re pleased he got through unscathed and did some good things.”
Looking Ahead
With Day back on the field, Hawthorn has taken a crucial step toward building a strong and cohesive team for the upcoming season. His presence brings not only skill and experience but also a sense of confidence and determination that can inspire his teammates. As the club continues to develop, players like Day will be vital in achieving their goals.
For now, Day is focused on maintaining his fitness and contributing to the team’s success. His journey serves as a reminder of the importance of perseverance, discipline, and teamwork in the world of professional football. With his return, the future looks bright for Hawthorn.
