Ump’s Disallowed Hawk Goal Wins AFL Approval

Controversial Umpiring Decision Backed by AFL

A controversial umpiring decision that disallowed a goal from Hawthorn star Nick Watson during a match against St Kilda has been supported by the Australian Football League (AFL). The incident sparked significant debate among players, coaches, and fans, with many questioning the call.

Watson had an excellent opportunity to score in the first half of the game at Marvel Stadium. His kick was well-executed, but the umpire ruled that he had moved off his line before taking the shot, which meant the goal was not counted. This decision came after the siren, leading to further confusion and frustration.

The AFL confirmed their support for the umpire’s decision on Friday, following Hawthorn’s request for an explanation. In a statement, the AFL said:

“The umpire, positioned directly behind the kick, correctly disallowed the score after Nick Watson moved off his line to the right and didn’t kick the ball over the man on the mark. The AFL have contacted Hawthorn and St Kilda today to provide an explanation regarding the decision.”

Despite the official backing, the decision left many baffled. Watson remained quiet after the match, while his coach, Sam Mitchell, expressed his disbelief.

“We’ll certainly be going to the AFL to ask about it … there’s no common sense about that,” Mitchell said on Thursday night.

“When something doesn’t make sense, they fix it pretty quickly. Why would he run wider, to give himself a harder shot?” he added.

Watson also voiced his frustration, though he chose to keep his comments brief.

“Don’t get me started … they’re pretty keen to get the whistle out,” Watson told Kayo Sports. “Actually I won’t say anything about the umpires, I might get a fine.”

Despite this setback, Hawthorn dominated the match, securing a 52-point victory. They kept St Kilda goalless until early in the third quarter, showcasing their strength and depth.

Will Day made a strong return to the field, playing his first game of the season without any issues. He was able to rest Jack Gunston for the final quarter, as Gunston had recently returned from injury. Gunston had already kicked five goals by three-quarter time, but Blake Hardwick stepped in and added four more, drawing some playful reactions from the Hawthorn bench.

“It was just mainly about how easy it is to play his role – that’s what all the other players were saying to him (Gunston),” Mitchell said. “Blake is a real favourite of all the boys, so when he’s down there kicking goals, they really enjoy that, to take the micky out of Jack.”

Day’s return was particularly significant, as he had previously suffered a dislocated shoulder during the pre-season, adding to his ongoing injury struggles. He spoke about the challenges he faced and the positive mindset he now carries.

“I just got to work, learned a lot about myself, and now coming back I’ve got a new mindset and I had a lot of fun (against St Kilda),” Day said.
