India’s T20I Series Begins with a Change in Leadership
The Indian women’s cricket team has started their three-match T20I series against England with a notable change in leadership. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur was not present for the first match, which took place at Chelmsford on Thursday. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed this decision through their official social media channels, stating that Kaur had been rested for the opening game.
In her absence, vice-captain Smriti Mandhana took charge as the team’s leader. During the toss, Mandhana assured the media that there were no fitness concerns or injuries affecting Kaur. She emphasized that the captain is simply taking a break and will return for the next match.
“She’s (Harmanpreet) resting today, no concerns at all. She’ll be ready for the next match,” Mandhana said, highlighting the team’s confidence in Kaur’s readiness.
The BCCI Women X handle also shared the news, stating:
“Captain Harmanpreet Kaur has been rested for the first T20I against England Women in Chelmsford. Smriti Mandhana is leading the side in her absence.”
Preparation for the T20 World Cup
This series serves as crucial preparation for the upcoming T20 World Cup. Both teams are using the opportunity to fine-tune their strategies and assess their players’ form ahead of the global tournament.
England, like India, is also missing their regular T20I captain, Nat Sciver Brunt. In her place, Charlotte Dean has taken over as the stand-in skipper for the match.
A New Star Makes Her Debut
One of the highlights of the match was the debut of Delhi Capitals pacer Nandini Sharma in the Indian team. As the leading wicket-taker of the 2026 Women’s Premier League, her inclusion in the squad marked a significant milestone. Before the match, captain Harmanpreet Kaur personally handed her the India cap, symbolizing her recognition as a key player.
Match Highlights
India’s batting lineup started with Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma. However, both were soon dismissed by England’s Lauren Bell. Mandhana was out for a duck, while Verma scored just two runs.
At this point, Jemimah Rodrigues and Yastika Bhatia were at the crease, tasked with steadying the innings. Jemmy played the role of an anchor, while Yasatika looked to build a substantial score.
