All You Need to Know About the Minecraft Movie: Cast and Sequel Revealed

After the incredible success of ‘A Minecraft Movie’, Warner Bros. has announced that a sequel is currently in development, promising fans more excitement and deeper exploration of the Minecraft universe.

At Twitchcon Europe 2026 in Rotterdam, Mojang unveiled new details about the upcoming film during a special edition of Minecraft Live. The sequel will introduce new adventures, additional biomes, and a stronger link to the established Minecraft lore.

Here’s a closer look at what we know so far about the sequel.

The Sequel Name

During Twitchcon Europe 2026, Mojang shared information about the sequel. The second film in this series will be titled ‘A Minecraft Movie Squared’. While it translates to Minecraft 2, the title hints at an algebraic connection within the story.

Release Date

‘A Minecraft Movie Squared’ is set to debut in cinemas worldwide on July 23, 2027. Production has already commenced, ensuring that the sequel will build upon the commercial success of its predecessor.

The Cast

Jack Black will return as Steve, the primary protagonist of the Minecraft universe, in the sequel. Jason Momoa is also expected to reprise his role as Garrett ‘The Garbage Man’ Garrison, a former gaming champion turned store owner who becomes entangled in the Minecraft world.

Danielle Brooks, Jennifer Coolidge, and Matt Berry are all confirmed to return. While Brooks and Coolidge are anticipated to play their characters, Dawn and Marlene, respectively, Matt Berry is expected to have a more prominent role in the film.

In the first movie, Berry played the role of a Nitwit, a Minecraft villager who had a romantic comedy-style storyline with Marlene after being transported to the real world. His expanded role in the sequel has sparked speculation among fans.

One new character joining the cast is Alex, portrayed by Kirsten Dunst. Alex is the female protagonist available to players in Minecraft, and it will be interesting to see how director Jared Hess develops the relationship between Alex and Steve in the sequel.

The ‘Herobrine’ Rumor

The increased role of Matt Berry in the sequel has led to speculation about the inclusion of Herobrine, a figure from Minecraft lore that dates back to the early 2010s. Herobrine is often described as a human-like Minecraft character with glowing white eyes who stalks players.

Although little is known about Herobrine, fans believe he possesses supernatural abilities, such as teleportation, which can also be achieved through mods in the game.

Mojang has incorporated the concept of Herobrine into the Minecraft lore, introducing the ‘Removed Herobrine’ as a patch note in one of the updates. This has only added to the mystery surrounding the character.
