Cruise Ship Cleared to Sail After Hantavirus Outbreak
A Dutch cruise ship that was at the center of a deadly hantavirus outbreak has been cleared to resume its journey following a thorough disinfection process. The MV Hondius, which sparked a global health concern earlier this month, is now ready to sail again after being cleaned in Rotterdam.
The outbreak led to 13 confirmed cases of hantavirus, with three fatalities reported. The virus, which is spread by rodents and has no known vaccine or specific treatment, affected passengers on the ship during its voyage from Ushuaia, Argentina, to Cape Verde. Some passengers had already left the ship at the island of St Helena before the alert was raised.

Following the incident, the Dutch public health agency conducted checks and confirmed that the MV Hondius had been effectively cleaned and disinfected according to established guidelines. This allowed the ship to be declared safe for sailing again.
Oceanwide Expeditions, the owner of the MV Hondius, announced that the ship would leave Rotterdam once all inspections were complete. It is expected to resume its cruise schedule starting on June 13.
Most of the passengers were taken off the ship on Tenerife in Spain’s Canary Islands and then flown back to their home countries. Among them were 22 British passengers who were taken to Arrowe Park Hospital on the Wirral, Merseyside, where they entered quarantine on May 10.
Six of the British passengers were released from the hospital on May 13, allowing them to complete their isolation at home. However, the remaining 16 passengers are still under quarantine.
The ship completed its transatlantic voyage on May 18 in Rotterdam, Europe’s largest port. At this point, the rest of the crew was placed in quarantine.

What Is Hantavirus?
Hantavirus is a rare but serious virus transmitted through contact with rodents. It can cause severe respiratory illness and has no known vaccine or specific treatment. The outbreak on the MV Hondius highlighted the importance of hygiene and safety measures in confined spaces such as cruise ships.
The situation serves as a reminder of the potential risks associated with travel and the need for strict health protocols to prevent the spread of infectious diseases. As the MV Hondius prepares to set sail again, it will likely face continued scrutiny to ensure the safety of its passengers and crew.
