The flight, designated as UA2005, departed from Chicago O’Hare International Airport around 8 p.m. and was diverted approximately 90 minutes later. Flight records confirm the change of course. The man, described by United Airlines as an “unruly passenger,” was restrained during the flight and remained under control until the plane landed. Upon arrival, federal and local authorities were waiting on the ground to detain him, as confirmed by an FBI spokesperson to The Independent.

Following the incident, the Dane County Sheriff’s Office released a statement on Saturday indicating that the unidentified man appeared confused and was experiencing a mental health crisis. His family in Minnesota has been informed and is currently en route to Madison to reunite with him.
The remaining passengers continued their journey to Minneapolis, arriving shortly after 2:00 a.m. local time. At the time of the incident, the flight had 147 passengers and six crew members on board, according to a United spokesperson.
No criminal charges are currently being pursued, as stated in the release. The FBI’s Milwaukee Madison Resident Agency is leading the investigation into the event.

Air traffic control audio obtained by NBC News captured communication between the flight crew and ground personnel as law enforcement responded to the incident. A crew member shared details about the situation, stating:
“I do not believe they ever cuffed him, but they were able to finally get control of him after multiple attempts to try to breach the cockpit,” the crew member said. “I believe at this point he is seated in a seat and flanked with law enforcement officers on either side.”
