Essendon’s Future Coaching Dilemma
Matthew Lloyd, a revered figure in Essendon’s history, has expressed confidence in the club’s ability to make the right decision when it comes to selecting a new senior coach. His comments come amid growing media attention surrounding the potential return of James Hird, a former Bombers icon, to the coaching role following the recent dismissal of Brad Scott.
Hird has publicly stated his desire to return to Tullamarine as the head coach. However, Lloyd emphasized that the selection process should not be seen as a “boat race” — a term often used to describe a competition where one candidate is perceived as having an unfair advantage. He also noted that other potential candidates might be hesitant to enter the fray if they believe Hird is already in a strong position.
“I don’t begrudge James at all. He is desperate to be the coach of this club and he genuinely wants to be the coach,” Lloyd said on Channel Nine’s The Sunday Footy Show. “I don’t hold anything against him for doing that. And I just hope these other coaches cannot feel it’s a boat race because it’s not. Welshy is his own man, he will pick the best coach for the club, I hope James can get an interview and these coaches can put their hand up and fight against James.”
Lloyd also stressed that Welshy (referring to Essendon’s chief executive, Andrew Demetriou) would not simply appoint Hird without due consideration. “I am telling you that Welshy will not just pick James Hird, he will pick the best coach for the footy club. This is not Hirdy’s job at all. He has to fight for it and he has to first get an interview first.”
Dean Solomon’s Potential
In addition to Hird, Lloyd has voiced his support for another premiership teammate, Essendon caretaker coach Dean Solomon. Despite a challenging start to his coaching stint, with a disappointing loss to the Eagles, the goal-kicking champion believes Solomon has the potential to secure several wins before the end of the season.
“This is not a bad start at all. I expect them to bounce and win four or five games on the way home,” Lloyd said. “People might be shocked by that, but the lift in senior players who haven’t been playing well because they haven’t been a happy club — if they can turn it around, the senior core players and they can win some games — Dean Solomon might even be a chance to coach next year.”
Key Considerations for the Selection Process
As the search for a new senior coach intensifies, several factors are likely to influence the final decision:
- Experience and Track Record: Coaches with a proven ability to lead teams to success will be highly regarded.
- Leadership and Vision: The ideal candidate should possess strong leadership qualities and a clear vision for the club’s future.
- Player Relationships: Building positive relationships with players is crucial for long-term success.
- Adaptability: The ability to adapt to changing circumstances and challenges on and off the field is essential.
Conclusion
With the pressure on Essendon to make the right choice, the input from respected figures like Matthew Lloyd could play a significant role in shaping the final decision. Whether it’s James Hird, Dean Solomon, or another candidate, the focus should remain on selecting the best person to lead the club forward.
