Harmanpreet Kaur Makes History as Most Capped Women’s Cricket Player
Indian women’s cricket captain Harmanpreet Kaur has made history by becoming the most capped player in women’s international cricket. This milestone was achieved during the third and final T20I between India and England in Taunton, where she played her 368th match. This surpasses the previous record held by New Zealand legend Suzie Bates, who had 367 appearances.
Harmanpreet made her international debut in 2009 during the Women’s World Cup against Pakistan in Bowral. She later made her T20I debut in the same year and made her Test debut in 2014. Over the years, she has become one of India’s greatest ever female cricketers, excelling across all three formats of the game.
Her impressive career statistics include 4,541 runs from 143 ODIs, with seven centuries and 24 half-centuries at an average of 37.22. Harmanpreet has also been a vital part of the Indian team in major tournaments and has captained the side in several key competitions.
Harmanpreet’s Place on the List of Most Appearances in Women’s Cricket
Here’s how Harmanpreet ranks on the list for most appearances in women’s international cricket:
- Harmanpreet Kaur – 368
- Suzie Bates – 367
- Ellyse Perry – 357
- Mithali Raj – 333
- Sophie Devine – 313
It is possible that Suzie Bates could tie with Harmanpreet when New Zealand faces West Indies on 13 June. However, Bates will retire from international cricket after the Women’s T20 World Cup. If Harmanpreet continues playing beyond the tournament, she may remain at the top of the list for a significant period.
When compared to men’s cricket records, Sachin Tendulkar holds the title of most capped player with 664 matches. Harmanpreet’s total is not far behind former Australian cricketer Mark Waugh, who played 372 internationals.
Harmanpreet’s Records in T20I and ODI Formats
Harmanpreet also holds the record for the most T20I caps in women’s cricket with 197 appearances. She is the seventh most capped player in women’s ODI history with 143 appearances.
India’s Focus on Series Win Against England
While this individual achievement was a proud moment, India’s primary goal was to win the T20I series against England. The three-match series was tied at 1-1, making Tuesday’s game a crucial decider. The team is looking for strong performances from experienced players like Deepti Sharma and Richa Ghosh.
India aims to address middle-order concerns ahead of the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup later this month. A series win against England would boost the team’s confidence and serve as valuable preparation for the tournament.
Both teams are treating this series as a high-stakes match, with expectations of intense competition. As the women’s team battles England for the series, Harmanpreet’s record-breaking appearance marks another significant moment in a career that has inspired a generation of female cricketers in India.
