Holiday stress set to worsen with flight prices expected to rise further next year

The Impact of the Jet Fuel Crisis on Travel

The travel industry is facing a significant challenge with soaring jet fuel prices, skyrocketing airline ticket costs, and a general sense of unease around holidays and international trips. This has created a negative outlook for many travelers, especially in the UK.

Recent data from a new Dispatches documentary reveals that over half a million global flights have been cancelled since the start of the Iran War on February 28 up until June 3. The documentary, titled “Will My Summer Holiday Be Cancelled?”, explores the current state of the aviation industry and what the future might hold for holidaymakers.

Aviation consultant Alex Macheras highlights the severity of the situation, stating that this crisis is the single greatest for global aviation since the pandemic. He explains that the period has been incredibly costly for airlines worldwide and warns that the financial burden will eventually be passed on to consumers.

According to industry projections, fares next year are likely to be higher than this year as airlines work to recover from their losses. This means that travelers may face increased costs when planning their holidays.

Rise in Domestic Travel

With the jet fuel crisis causing concern among Brits about booking international holidays, staycations have become the preferred choice for many. The UK domestic holiday market is set to grow by seven per cent to nearly £14 billion this year.

Short-term holiday rentals in the UK have seen a 16 per cent increase, with popular destinations including Blackpool, Devon, and the Lake District. This trend has led to a surge in demand for local holidays, providing a boost to the domestic tourism sector.

Butlin’s, a beloved holiday park in Bognor Regis, has experienced a significant increase in business since the conflict began. Matt Rake, resort director at Butlin’s Bognor Regis, shared that the park sold out during May half term and saw a 22 per cent increase in bookings. The resort also reported selling 30,000 scoops of ice cream and 35,000 burgers across its three resorts.

Fluctuating Airline Prices

While UK staycations are on the rise, long-haul flights are not as popular. Experts predict that prices will drop before they increase, offering potential savings for travelers willing to book now.

Skyscanner reports that the top 10 destinations with the biggest price drops for economy class return departures in August 2026 include Cape Town, Las Vegas, and Nice. Flights to South Africa’s capital are actually 20 per cent cheaper than they were a year prior.

Consumer champion Janes Hawkes notes that some airlines will start reducing their fares to attract passengers. She suggests that package holidays may also see discounts as companies strive to fill their seats.

Rory Boland, travel editor at Which?, warns that these discounts may not last. He explains that the cost of jet fuel has risen significantly, and this will eventually be reflected in ticket prices. However, he adds that the current low demand for flights could result in bargains for travelers.

Understanding the Risks

Boland emphasizes the differences in risk between long-haul and short-haul flights. The UK and EU offer strong protections for flight cancellations and disruptions, but travelers venturing beyond these regions may face greater uncertainty.

To mitigate the risks associated with the current crisis, booking a package holiday is a wise choice. Companies are obligated to provide alternative routes or refunds if changes or cancellations occur. Many providers, including Trailfinders, Jet2, and Tui, have pledged not to add surcharges due to higher fuel costs.

As the situation continues to evolve, it’s essential for travelers to stay informed and make decisions based on their individual needs and risk tolerance. The future of air travel remains uncertain, but there are options available to help navigate the challenges ahead.
