Honda Recalls: Your 1 Million Car Action Plan

Major Safety Recall Issued for Honda and Acura Vehicles Over Critical Suspension Defect

American Honda Motor Co. has initiated a significant recall affecting over 880,000 vehicles across its Honda and Acura brands. The recall addresses a critical safety defect concerning the rear suspension components, which, if compromised, could lead to a loss of vehicle control and increase the risk of accidents or injuries.

The affected models include a broad range of popular vehicles:

  • Honda Pilot: Model years 2016-2022
  • Honda Ridgeline: Model years 2017-2023
  • Honda Passport: Model years 2019-2023
  • Acura MDX: Model years 2014-2020

This extensive recall primarily targets vehicles originally sold in specific regions of the United States, known for their susceptibility to road salt and de-icing chemicals that can accelerate corrosion. These states include: Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and the District of Columbia.

Understanding the Defect: Corrosion and Component Failure

The root cause of this safety concern lies within the rear subframe of the affected vehicles. Over time, corrosion can develop at the points where the suspension mounts to the subframe. This degradation can weaken the structural integrity of these critical connection points, potentially leading to the failure of rear suspension components. Such a failure could result in a sudden and uncontrolled loss of steering or stability, posing a severe hazard to drivers, passengers, and other road users.

While Honda estimates that only about 1% of the recalled vehicles are likely to exhibit this defect, the potential severity of the issue necessitates a comprehensive recall. The company has reported no warranty claims or any incidents of injury or death directly linked to this specific problem.

What Owners Can Expect: Inspection and Repair

Honda and Acura dealerships will be undertaking the necessary repairs free of charge to vehicle owners. The remedy process involves a thorough inspection of the rear subframe. If the defect is identified, a reinforcement kit will be installed to strengthen the affected areas. In more severe cases, the dealership will repair or replace the compromised rear subframe components.

Owner notification letters are scheduled to be dispatched starting July 7. Vehicle owners can also proactively check if their vehicle is affected by searching the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) website, NHTSA.gov, using their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). This VIN lookup capability is expected to be available from June 10.

The NHTSA has assigned campaign number 26V367000 to this recall. Honda’s internal identification numbers for this safety action are AOU and AOT.

Broader Context: Recent Automotive Recalls

This significant recall from Honda comes in the wake of another major safety announcement earlier this week. Stellantis, the parent company of Jeep, issued a global recall for over 1.3 million Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator SUVs and trucks due to fire concerns. This Stellantis recall, affecting 2021-2025 model-year vehicles, was prompted by a potential issue with an electrical connection in the electric-hydraulic power steering pump wiring. In rare circumstances, this connection could overheat, leading to a fire risk. Approximately 1.08 million of these vehicles are in the United States, with additional units in Canada, Mexico, and other international markets. Stellantis plans to inspect and, if necessary, repair or replace the affected wiring harness or power steering pump as part of their remedy.
