Rana’s Selection Questioned: BCCI Faces Cricketer’s Scrutiny Before England Tour

India is set to embark on a challenging tour, pitting their skills against Ireland and England in a series of T20 International (T20I) and One Day International (ODI) matches. The itinerary includes two T20Is against Ireland, followed by a more extensive campaign against England, featuring five T20Is and three ODIs.

The squad announcement for these upcoming fixtures has brought a significant boost for the Indian team, with the inclusion of Harshit Rana. However, this decision has not been met with universal approval. Former Indian cricketer Sadagoppan Ramesh has voiced his strong reservations regarding Rana’s selection, questioning the rationale behind it.

Rana’s inclusion comes after a considerable period on the sidelines. He has reportedly been out of action for approximately four months, having been ruled out of the T20I World Cup due to a ligament injury. This setback also led to him missing the entirety of the IPL 2026 campaign.

Ramesh Questions Selection Criteria

Sadagoppan Ramesh has highlighted a perceived inconsistency in selection policies, particularly concerning players returning from injuries. He pointed to a previously established precedent where cricketers recovering from injuries were expected to demonstrate their fitness and form in the domestic circuit before being considered for a national team recall.

Expressing his concerns via his Instagram account, Ramesh directly questioned the selectors’ decision regarding Harshit Rana’s place in the T20I squad. He stated, “How have you selected Harshit Rana? I don’t think he has played any domestic cricket after knee surgery. Nobody knows the answer to this. Just imagine Shami’s mind voice now, or even the others’ mind voice.”

Ramesh elaborated by drawing parallels with other prominent Indian cricketers, including Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Hardik Pandya. He argued that even these established stars were required to prove their fitness and regain form in domestic competitions before earning a spot back in the national squad.

Precedent of Proving Fitness

Ramesh further elaborated on this point, recalling instances where players were mandated to participate in domestic matches to prove their readiness. He noted, “Whether it was a Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma, the management said they had to play domestic cricket to be considered for selection. Even when Hardik Pandya got injured, he was asked to prove his fitness for selection. For Shami, they questioned if he could bowl longer spells after injury and asked him to prove himself after injury.”

The former cricketer also cited the current T20I skipper, Shreyas Iyer, as another example. Iyer was reportedly asked to prove his fitness by playing in the Vijay Hazare Trophy prior to his selection for the New Zealand ODIs. Ramesh concluded, “There are many such examples like this. So they’ve set the precedent that if a player has to come back into the Indian team, especially after injury, he must prove himself and his fitness in domestic cricket.”

Upcoming Series Details

The tour is scheduled to commence with the two-match T20I series against Ireland, which is slated to begin on June 26. Following this engagement, the Indian team will proceed to face England in their respective T20I and ODI series. The specifics of the England fixtures will be released in due course, but the tour promises to be a significant test for the Indian squad as they navigate these challenging international commitments. The selections and the ensuing debates will undoubtedly add an extra layer of intrigue to the upcoming matches.
