Fifty Countries, Three Obsessions

While I’ve been fortunate enough to explore over 50 countries, there are three destinations that consistently draw me back, each offering a unique blend of experiences that have etched themselves into my heart. As a seasoned travel writer and photographer, my journeys have been vast and varied, from trekking with mountain goats in Austria and braving the Antarctic snow to undertaking an eight-day solo pilgrimage in Japan and even trying my hand at lobster fishing in Newfoundland. Having set foot on all seven continents and visited more than 50 nations, the question I’m most frequently asked is, “What’s your absolute favourite place?”

It’s a question that’s genuinely challenging to answer, as I firmly believe every corner of the globe possesses its own distinct charm. However, a select few locations have embraced me so warmly that I find myself yearning to return time and again. The places that resonate most deeply with me are those that ignite my passion for photography, boast an exceptional culinary and beverage scene, offer breathtaking outdoor adventures, feature quaint towns perfect for leisurely exploration, and provide opportunities for genuine connection with local culture, people, and the natural world.

These are the three countries that continuously fuel my wanderlust and beckon me back with an irresistible pull.

Iceland: Where Everything Feels Cooler

My first encounter with Iceland was love at first sight. From the very first day, I was captivated, and I’ve since returned multiple times, with no intention of breaking this cherished tradition. I’ve always been an ardent fan of road trips, and Iceland is practically tailor-made for them, even down to its surprisingly delicious gas station hot dogs – seriously, they’re a must-try! The country’s otherworldly landscapes, cascading waterfalls, rich Viking heritage, and, of course, its incredible natural hot springs and vibrant swimming culture, all combine to create an unforgettable experience.

Each season in Iceland offers a distinct spectacle. In the summer months, you can witness the charming puffins in their natural habitat, while winter brings the mesmerising dance of the Northern Lights across the night sky. Having explored the island independently on several occasions, I’ve always felt incredibly safe, making Iceland an excellent choice for solo travellers. My camera rarely rests here; the sheer, unending beauty at every turn makes it a photographer’s paradise. While I’m not typically drawn to bustling cities, Iceland is home to my favourite capital: Reykjavik. Its food and cultural scene is truly extraordinary. If you ever have the chance to celebrate New Year’s Eve there, as I did recently, prepare to be utterly amazed.

Italy: A Home Away From Home

Italy has become so familiar and beloved that it truly feels like a second home, and it’s not solely due to my family’s ancestral ties to the country. My initial visit over a decade ago ignited an enduring obsession and a deep desire to return almost every year. I even spent a memorable summer teaching English at a small school nestled in the heart of Tuscany. I’ve had the privilege of walking in the very footsteps of my maternal grandfather in the humble village where he grew up. My explorations have spanned the diverse landscapes of Italy, from the serene Lake District and rolling hills of Tuscany to the rugged Ligurian coast (where I once savoured a fantastic fish festival), the sun-drenched heel of Puglia, the majestic Dolomites, the breathtaking Amalfi Coast, and most recently, the enchanting island of Sicily.

During a delightful two-week holiday with my partner, our absolute favourite spot was the Aeolian Island of Salina. We relished a wonderfully unhurried few days at what I consider the finest hotel I’ve ever had the pleasure of staying in: Principe di Salina.

I’ve discovered that each Italian region presents its own unique character and offerings, complemented by a plethora of festivals and events held throughout the year. Every corner of Italy feels like a living museum, a journey through history, with its charming medieval hilltop villages, ancient ruins, and a rich tapestry of art and culture.

And let’s not even begin to discuss the food and wine! Italy is, without a doubt, a culinary mecca, fulfilling every gastronomic craving I could possibly have.

Switzerland: A Place of Profound Beauty

The first time I set foot on Swiss soil, I was starstruck. I was also somewhat lost, in all senses of the word. Physically, I was looking for a cog train; mentally, I was figuring out my next life chapter.

It turns out that spectacular scenery, a change of pace, and hiking with sheep can do wonders to clear your head. So, Switzerland will always hold a special place in my heart.

Although I’ve visited the country more than seven times since that initial trip, I’m still enamored by the crisp Swiss air, spectacular outdoor adventure opportunities, and chocolate.

I’ve criss-crossed the country on the incredibly efficient and scenic trains, trekked to peaks, through small villages, behind waterfalls, and valleys, and even raced down a mountain track on a Super Mario-style cart.

Although I’ve spent time in many of the diverse regions, Switzerland’s sunny Ticino may be my favorite. This region on the edge of Lake Maggiore blends the best of Swiss and Italian food and culture, and is the perfect alternative to Lake Como, away from the crowds.

Switzerland holds a profoundly special place in my heart. Its unparalleled natural beauty, from the soaring peaks of the Alps to the pristine turquoise lakes, is simply awe-inspiring.

A Trio of Unforgettable Experiences

These three countries, Iceland, Italy, and Switzerland, offer a trifecta of experiences that cater to my deepest travel desires. Whether it’s the raw, untamed wilderness of Iceland, the rich cultural heritage and culinary delights of Italy, or the majestic, serene landscapes of Switzerland, each destination provides a unique and fulfilling adventure that keeps me coming back for more. The ability to connect with nature, immerse myself in local traditions, and savour incredible food and drink makes these countries the pillars of my travel journey.
