Among the ranks of elite performers today, there may be no one who demonstrates the chameleon-like versatility of Amy Adams. In the irony of fate, Adams finds herself caught in an extreme paradox: the comic book heroine she had dreamed of for a lifetime turns out to be a very confining trap for her creativity. While being known for bringing intense, complex emotionality to every project she worked on, Adams’ criticism of Zack Snyder‘s ‘Superman‘ movie, ‘Man of Steel,’ proved to be a landmark moment in her career.
Adams first heard about her opportunity to become the next Lois Lane years before appearing on screen together with her co-star Henry Cavill. Back in the day, when she was still a little girl, the actress used to dream of portraying the famous heroine, the Daily Planet reporter from Metropolis, but the machinery of a movie franchise almost brought her professional career to a standstill.
Amy Adams Decadelong Hunt For Metropolis

Starting her career with the brilliant Oscar-nominated performance in ‘Junebug,’ she has since proven her ability to take huge creative risks with visionary directors.
However, the fascination with the Metropolis reporter predated her casting as Lois Lane by a considerable time. Already back in her days when she hadn’t even heard about ‘Superman,’ Adams auditioned for Lois Lane in the unproduced ‘Superman: Flyby‘ reboot of the 2000s.
When it failed, Adams decided to make one more attempt, this time for ‘Superman Returns‘ however, the coveted role went to Kate Bosworth. Furthermore, the flop at the box office of the latter dashed any hopes of a sequel.
In turn, the incredible success of Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Dark Knight‘ movies led Warner Bros. to consider making a modernized origin story of the ‘Man of Steel.’

Once David S. Goyer presented his ambitious pitch, WB management saw an opportunity to cast the role with a fresh actor. Adams finally achieved the goal she had worked toward for nearly 10 years.
“I never would have imagined I would play Lois Lane, though I used to pretend to be her,” said Adams herself. “It wasn’t that I wanted to be a reporter. I just loved her spunk and how she seemed smarter than everybody else.”
Despite the actress’s indisputable talent, the script completely fails to show how to use a modern woman journalist. Constantly reminding the viewers of her Pulitzer Prize-winning work, the narrative manages to demonstrate the reporter’s work as nothing but clumsy and artificial.
Adams’ Chemistry With Henry Cavill

Another flaw that is rather prominent in Adams’ portrayal is her awkward on-screen chemistry with Henry Cavill, which is explained by several factors but primarily attributed to Snyder’s cold directing style.
Luckily, Adams managed to compensate for the obvious artistic mistakes in the aforementioned movie and deliver another brilliant Oscar-nominated performance in ‘American Hustle,‘ while earning critical acclaim for her soft performance in Spike Jonze’s ‘Her.’ Furthermore, despite the poor quality of ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,‘ she still played a crucial role.
Once again, the irony is that the latter event coincided with another when Adams delivered two of the greatest dramatic performances she had ever given in films such as ‘Arrival‘ and ‘Nocturnal Animals.‘ 3 years later, Adams’ participation in the superhero franchise led to her falling victim to the notorious “Superman curse.”

In fact, the last four years proved quite difficult for her, since, besides the mentioned Justice League, she took part in a bunch of poorly received productions.
Fortunately for her, modern high-budget TV series have become a salvation of sorts. Adams’ performance in the new adaptation of ‘Cape Fear‘ earns her numerous rave reviews and much praise.
Above all, Adams’ upcoming blockbuster movie promises much to both her fans and the industry as a whole. The upcoming ‘Star Wars‘ movie, ‘Star Wars: Starfighter’, 2027, is generating huge hype among her fans, and the announcement of her participation in the film alongside Ryan Gosling, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, and Matt Smith seems like a triumph in the making.
