Hidden Gems for Affordable Family Adventures
Parents across the UK often find themselves dreading the high costs of six-week summer holidays. However, some of the most affordable family days out can be found in unexpected places, offering unique and cost-effective experiences without breaking the bank.
Instead of splurging on major city or coastal attractions, families can explore England’s smaller regional towns to discover hidden gems that provide incredible value. To assist with this, a ticket booking service called Split My Fare has ranked 71 UK cities based on attraction prices, public transport, parking, and meal costs. This ranking highlights the ultimate budget-friendly destinations for a family of four.
Hereford: The Most Affordable City for Family Days Out
One such city is Hereford, a cathedral city located on the Welsh border. It offers the UK’s most affordable family days out, with local activities averaging just £17.67 – the lowest average price of any city in the country. This figure is almost seven times lower than London’s average of £117.60.
Families can save significantly on travel costs before even starting their day. Parking in Hereford is a third of what is charged in London, at £8.13 compared to £31.33. Additionally, a family of four traveling from London Paddington to Hereford can cut their return rail fare from £189.45 down to £139.94 by using split-ticketing, saving £49.51.
Visitors can enjoy scenic walks along the River Wye, which offers beautiful views close to the train station and cathedral. Inside the cathedral, they can admire the famous 13th-century Mappa Mundi and explore an impressive collection of rare chained books.
As England’s cider capital, Hereford is also known for its fantastic cider bars, including the Old Market, Museum of Cider, and weekly farmers’ market. Visitors can try Gasping Goose, an organic medium cider produced at the local family-run farm, Newton Court.
The city boasts a range of family-friendly activities, such as the inflatable world of Flip Out Hereford, ten-pin bowling at Discobowl, paddleboard excursions along the River Wye, and woodland adventure fun at Queenswood Country Park.
A 30-minute drive or one-hour bus journey to nearby Ross-on-Wye brings families to the Wye Valley Butterfly Zoo, home to 40 different species of exotic butterflies, a sprawling traditional hedge maze, and a mini-golf course. Entry tickets are affordable, with adult tickets costing £6.75 and children aged between 5 and 15 years paying £4.75. Children aged four and under enter for free.

The Most Expensive Cities for Family Attractions

- Doncaster – £92.00
- Leicester – £84.00
- Worcester – £83.60
- Milton Keynes – £81.29

The study reveals a clear trend: the most affordable family day trips are typically found in smaller, hidden-gem cities, all reachable by train from major hubs in under three hours. By choosing these destinations, families can enjoy incredible savings while still experiencing rich cultural and historical experiences.
Travel savings quickly add up when families choose to ‘split-save’. For example, a sample family-of-four return ticket from Manchester Piccadilly to Gloucester costs £322.50, but this drops to £205.71 simply by splitting the journey into connecting tickets – enough to cover the next family day out.
By exploring these lesser-known cities, families can create unforgettable memories without the financial burden. Whether it’s strolling along the River Wye, admiring medieval treasures, or enjoying a day at the butterfly zoo, there’s something for everyone in these hidden gems.
