A Legacy of Excellence: Europe’s Timeless Hotels
When it comes to choosing a place to stay, Europe has always offered an impressive array of options. From the latest luxury hotels to those that have stood the test of time, there is something for every traveler. While new properties often dominate the headlines, some hotels have managed to maintain their charm and reputation over decades.
Esquire magazine recently launched its Hotel Hall of Fame, a list celebrating 21 hotels around the world that have become iconic destinations. Rather than focusing on the newest openings, the editors chose properties that have made a lasting impact on their communities and cities.
To be included in the list, each hotel had to be open for at least five years and demonstrate a significant contribution to the local culture and identity. This selection highlights not only the beauty and elegance of these establishments but also their role in shaping the regions they are located in.
Europe plays a major role in this inaugural list, with nine properties spanning several countries. These include France, Italy, Monaco, Switzerland, the UK, and Ireland. Together, they represent over a century of hospitality history, from grand Belle Époque palaces to elegant country estates.
Some of the notable European hotels on the list include:
- Hôtel de Crillon, A Rosewood Hotel – A Parisian landmark known for its grandeur and timeless elegance.
- Le Meurice – Another iconic Parisian hotel, celebrated for its luxurious ambiance and rich history.
- Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni and Grand Hotel Tremezzo – Two acclaimed hotels overlooking Lake Como, offering breathtaking views and exceptional service.
- Hotel Eden – Located in Rome, this hotel is a symbol of Italian sophistication and charm.
- Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo – A legendary property in Monaco, known for its opulence and exclusive atmosphere.
- Badrutt’s Palace – An alpine retreat in St. Moritz, Switzerland, renowned for its scenic beauty and luxury.
- Hotel Café Royal – A historic London establishment that has remained a favorite among travelers.
- Ballyfin Demesne – Situated in County Laois, Ireland, this estate offers a unique blend of history and natural beauty.
Madison Vain, Executive Editor at Esquire, emphasized the importance of longevity in the hospitality industry. “Being great for any span of time is hard work; doing so for years on end is downright remarkable,” she said. “But the thing is, for these 21 hotels, there’s no end to their reign in sight.”
