A Father’s Unwavering Support: Teddi Mellencamp Honours John Mellencamp at iHeartRadio Awards
The glitz and glamour of the 2026 iHeartRadio Music Awards at the Dolby Theatre saw a deeply personal moment unfold as Teddi Mellencamp took the stage to present the iHeart Radio Music Icon Award to her legendary father, rock and roll icon John Mellencamp. While the world knows John as a prolific artist and hitmaker, Teddi revealed a more intimate perspective, highlighting his profound impact on her life, particularly during her courageous battle with cancer.
Teddi, 44, a familiar face from her time on The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, was diagnosed with melanoma in 2022. The news took a devastating turn in February 2025 when her condition advanced to stage four cancer, with metastases reaching her lungs and brain. It was during this incredibly challenging period that her father, the 74-year-old musical powerhouse, became her rock and unwavering support system.
“Tonight we celebrate the career of my dad, John Mellencamp,” Teddi began her heartfelt speech. “But before I tell you the story of John Mellencamp, the artist, I want to tell you the story of him as a father. He’s being honored as an icon, a legend, a hitmaker, but to me, he’ll always be ‘dad.’”
She went on to describe the immense gratitude she feels for her father’s intervention during her darkest hours. “He stepped up, took control, fought for me, and pretty much changed my life, saved my life,” she shared, her voice thick with emotion, detailing how he became her champion in the aftermath of her cancer diagnosis.
Navigating Life with a Rock Star Dad
The question of “growing up with a rock star for a father” is a common one, and Teddi offered a candid and refreshing perspective. “In my eyes, it was no different than anybody else,” she stated. “He gave me advice, he’d give me groundings, he would love on me.” This grounded upbringing, she explained, allowed her to see beyond the public persona and appreciate the devoted father figure.
Teddi also drew a poignant connection between her father’s music and her personal journey. She highlighted how the lyrics of his song “Longest Days” resonated deeply with her, especially after her stage four diagnosis.
- “But nothing lasts forever / Your best efforts don’t always pay / Sometimes when you get sick, you don’t get better / That’s when life is short, even at its longest days.”
Tearing up as she recited the lines, Teddi explained the profound meaning these words held for her. “Because it was a little over a year ago when I got sick, my life felt short even when the days in the hospital seemed to go on forever.” While John’s lyrics acknowledged the harsh realities of illness, Teddi emphasised that her father refused to let those words define her fate.
A Journey of Healing and Hope
Teddi’s battle with cancer has been a public one, marked by significant medical interventions. Following her stage four diagnosis in 2025, which saw the cancer spread to her lungs and brain, she underwent extensive treatment.
- Major Brain Surgery: This critical procedure was performed to remove four tumours that had developed in her brain.

In October, Teddi shared incredibly hopeful news on the Two T’s in a Pod podcast with Real Housewives of New Jersey star Dolores Catania. She revealed that she had achieved “no detectable cancer.” This announcement brought immense relief and joy, though she acknowledged the ongoing nature of her recovery.
“When they told me, I was in such shock. I was like, numb,” she recalled the moment she received the positive update. She also clarified that she will continue with immunotherapy treatments for another year. “I’m still going to be having days when I’m feeling sick and stuff because I still am in immunotherapy, so I’m still fighting because you have to be,” she explained, underscoring her commitment to her health.
While not yet officially declared in remission, the progress is significant. “I’m not considered in remission or anything like that,” Teddi noted. “The way the [doctors] said it works, it’s like one year, then two years, then at three years you’re allowed to be considered… in remission. So, but that was huge news yesterday.”
Earlier in the year, John Mellencamp had inadvertently sparked concerns about Teddi’s health during an appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast, where he described her as “really sick” and “suffering.” Teddi later clarified these remarks during an episode of Two T’s in a Pod, explaining that her father’s use of “suffering” referred to her mental and emotional state rather than her physical condition. “There’s still no trace of cancer,” she reassured listeners at the time, reinforcing the positive trajectory of her health.
Teddi’s presentation of the iHeart Radio Music Icon Award to her father was more than just an industry recognition; it was a powerful testament to the enduring strength of family bonds and the profound impact of a father’s love in overcoming life’s most formidable challenges. “We’re celebrating the icon, the artist, a man the whole world knows as John Mellencamp. A man I get to call dad, and my best friend,” she concluded, a sentiment that resonated deeply with everyone present.
