Author Reveals Star Trek Idea Rejected Before Hail Mary Success

Andy Weir’s Critique of the New Star Trek Series

Author Andy Weir, known for his bestselling novel The Martian, has shared his thoughts on a new Star Trek series idea that was rejected by Paramount. The 53-year-old writer, who gained fame after his book was adapted into a film starring Matt Damon in 2015, expressed strong opinions about the current Star Trek spin-off series.

Weir described the shows as “s” and mentioned that his pitch was not accepted, leading him to say, “you know, f ‘em.” During an episode of the Critical Drinker podcast, he discussed the influence of the original Star Trek on modern science fiction, stating that the current batch of Star Trek shows is an exception.

As a member of Generation X, Weir grew up watching reruns of the original Star Trek and Lost in Space. He noted that it wasn’t until Star Trek: The Next Generation that there was a significant amount of sci-fi content being aired that depicted people exploring space doing cool things.

When the podcast host, Will Jordan, suggested removing everything since the prequel series Star Trek: Enterprise from the show’s canon, Weir responded, “Okay, you’re a little more severe than I am.” He continued to express his views on the recent franchise, saying, “I’ll give you my opinion and I’m just a consumer. I like Strange New Worlds. I think it’s pretty good. I didn’t hate Enterprise. I thought it was kind of weird. Lower Decks I thought was entertaining and fun. All the others, they can go.”

Weir’s Own Idea for a Star Trek Show

Weir then revealed that he had pitched his own Star Trek show to Paramount. He described the experience of discussing his idea with the showrunners and executive producer Alex Kurtzman during a Zoom meeting. While he admitted that Kurtzman is a nice person, he maintained that the current Trek series are “s.” Despite this, he acknowledged that the shows were not accepted, leading him to conclude, “they didn’t accept my pitch so, you know, f ‘em.”

Paramount did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Independent regarding Weir’s remarks.

Project Hail Mary and Its Success

In other news, Project Hail Mary, based on Weir’s novel, recently surpassed Avatar: Fire and Ash to become the highest-grossing Hollywood film of the year. Ryan Gosling stars in the movie as a middle school science teacher tasked with traveling to space to save the world.
