Pickleball is slowly making its mark in Belgium, with a new initiative aiming to introduce the sport to a broader audience through community sessions in Lasne. A non-profit organization called Pick’L Club, founded by Mathieu Clairet, Alexandre Giuliani, and Sydney Mahy, will host introductory pickleball sessions this Saturday at Renipont Plage.
“We were tired of closed clubs, musty-smelling locker rooms, and sports where you have to know how to play to have fun!” the founders said.
The trio launched the initiative to promote pickleball, a racket sport that combines elements of tennis, padel, and table tennis, with a focus on accessibility and enjoyment.
“Alex is originally an excellent tennis player, a former Belgian prospect,” Mathieu said. “I sometimes play against him myself, but it’s not easy to have fun given the difference in skill level.”
“It’s much more enjoyable when you play pickleball, which is a rapidly growing sport. In fact, it had the highest percentage growth in the world in terms of player numbers last year.”
He added that the sport is already well established in other regions.
“It’s incredibly popular in the United States and is developing in South America, Asia, France, and Spain. Here in Belgium, it’s just starting to catch on.”
“There’s sometimes a court in a padel facility or a sports center. But it’s not a very widespread sport yet. So we wanted to help make it more accessible.”
Why Pickleball is Gaining Popularity
Highlighting the sport’s ease of entry, the founders stressed that pickleball does not require advanced skills.
“Because, in reality, it’s a really great sport to play. You don’t necessarily need a lot of technique, cardio, or explosiveness to play it.”
“You can practice. You don’t need to be Roger Federer to get into it. And besides, it’s accessible, recreational, and friendly.”
The sessions are expected to give newcomers the opportunity to experience the sport firsthand as pickleball continues to expand its footprint in Belgium.
