Nottingham Forest’s Squad Update Ahead of Crucial Match
Nottingham Forest manager Vitor Pereira has shared positive news regarding the fitness of key players ahead of the team’s upcoming Premier League clash against Burnley. Chris Wood and Murillo are expected to be fit for the match, but Callum Hudson-Odoi faces a period on the sidelines due to an injury.
The club recently made history by reaching their first European semi-final since 1984 after Morgan Gibbs-White’s goal secured a 2-1 aggregate win over Porto in the Europa League quarter-final. This victory sets up an all-English last-four tie with Aston Villa, offering a chance to continue their successful European campaign.
Despite the historic achievement, the team’s position in the Premier League remains a concern. The match against Porto was not without its challenges, as Wood, Murillo, and Hudson-Odoi all had to leave the field due to injuries. Wood suffered a kick to the knee during a challenge that resulted in Jan Bednarek being sent off. Murillo sustained a knock, while Hudson-Odoi was seen holding his thigh before leaving the stadium on crutches.
Pereira expressed optimism about the recovery of Wood and Murillo, stating, “I’m not a doctor but I think Chris and Murillo will not be anything special. Of course, Chris has a bruise on his knee, but I believe that him and Murillo will be ready for Burnley.” However, he confirmed that Hudson-Odoi’s injury is more serious, adding, “Callum has a muscle injury and it is not possible, that’s the bad news.”
The manager emphasized the importance of maintaining energy and focus for the upcoming game, saying, “In my mind, we just know the next game we need to fight again with energy. I need to recharge myself with a Tesla charger because I need energy, but after a win it is easier to recover than when we lose. When you lose, the headache is worse to recover. We try to be in our best condition for Sunday.”
A Night of Support and Unity
The victory came at a difficult time for the club, as they rallied around England international Elliot Anderson, whose mother passed away before the game. Gibbs-White celebrated his winning goal by holding up a shirt in tribute to Anderson, which read, “Family first, we’re all with you.”
Pereira acknowledged the emotional impact of the situation, saying, “Very sad situation. Everyone plays with Elliot in his heart. They think about him; my condolences to the family. We’re here to help him, and we’ll see if he can play the next game. I said to my players at the end of the game in the dressing room that it is an honour for me to be a manager of this group. When we feel we are fighting for each other, when someone of us is suffering, we are there to support and there to take care. That is why I feel very proud of my team.”
A New Era for Nottingham Forest
Not since the era of Brian Clough have Forest performed so well on the continent, where they won back-to-back European Cups and reached the last four of the UEFA Cup within five years. Now, a two-legged tie with Premier League rivals Aston Villa stands in the way of another opportunity to achieve European success.
Pereira highlighted the importance of connecting with supporters and fostering a sense of unity, saying, “It’s important to put smiles on the faces of the supporters, to connect the team with the supporters, to unite the family and to believe. We feel that we are creating something, the spirit to compete, to enjoy, to celebrate and to suffer together, and this is the true spirit of a club.”
