Asante took to Twitter to recount his experience with Hood. He described a day when the wide receivers and defensive backs were engaged in 1v1 drills. Asante, who was a team captain at the time, attended the session to get some coverage work.
What he witnessed was unforgettable. Hood, the only defensive back participating in the drills, faced off against seven or eight wide receivers. Despite the challenge, Hood showed incredible determination and stamina. Asante noted that Hood completed so many reps that he had to take a five-minute break before finishing the session.
A Moment That Changed Everything
This experience was so impactful that Asante immediately shared it with the coaching staff. He ran upstairs to their defensive coordinator and expressed his belief that Hood was the player they needed on the field. “And it’s no coincidence he blossomed into what he became at Tennessee,” Asante wrote.
From Auburn to Tennessee
Hood’s time at Auburn was brief, as he played in only four games and took a redshirt. After leaving for Colorado, he became a standout alongside Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter. His performance there included 24 tackles, six pass breakups, two interceptions, and a tackle for a loss.
He then transferred to Tennessee, where he truly made a name for himself. Hood was a Jim Thorpe Award semifinalist and earned second-team AP All-SEC honors. His stats included 50 tackles, 4.5 tackles for a loss, an interception, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, and nine passes defended.
