Nigerian Athletes Shine in Outdoor Season

Nigerian athletes have made a strong start to the outdoor season, achieving notable successes across various disciplines including sprints, jumps, and throws. Their performances have included victories, personal bests, and even a national record.

Javelin Thrower Sets New National Record

On Friday, Chinecherem Nnamdi, a javelin thrower, delivered an outstanding performance at the Tom Jones Memorial in Florida. He won the men’s javelin event with a personal best of 84.68 meters. This achievement not only broke his own national record by nearly two meters but also placed him seventh on the African all-time list. Despite having a short 2025 season, Nnamdi’s performance highlights his potential for future competitions.

Sprinting Success at Tom Jones Memorial

Kanyinsola Ajayi, an NCAA indoor champion, continued his impressive form from the indoor season. At the same meet on Saturday, he sprinted to a wind-assisted time of 9.90 seconds (2.9 m/s) to win the men’s 100m invitational race. Ajayi led an Auburn and Nigerian 1-2 finish, with Israel Okon placing second in 9.95 seconds, while Minnesota’s Jaiden Reid finished third in 10.01 seconds.

High Jump Dominance

In the jumps, Temitope Adeshina maintained her strong performance in the women’s high jump. She cleared 1.95 meters (6-4¾) to win at the Mt. SAC Relays held at Hilmer Lodge Stadium in Walnut, California, on Saturday. Her clearance ranks as the third-best mark in Texas Tech history and currently stands as the top mark in the NCAA this season.

Adeshina, a three-time Nigerian national champion, holds a personal best and national record of 1.97 meters. She remains unbeaten this season and is aiming for her first outdoor title.

400m Performance and World Championships Return

Ezekiel Nathaniel, a World Championships finalist, began his 2026 campaign at the Tom Jones Memorial. He clocked 45.47 seconds to finish fourth in his 400m heat. This was his first individual race since finishing fourth in the dramatic 400m hurdles final at the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo. The race was won by World Indoor champion Christopher Morales-Williams, who set a world-leading time of 44.30 seconds.

Women’s 400m Impressive Start

In the women’s 400m, Chioma Nwachukwu impressed with a new personal best of 51.24 seconds to kick off her outdoor season. Her performance places her second on Nigeria’s 2026 top list, making her one of four Nigerian women to have run under 52 seconds this year.
