Cruise Expert Reveals Seven Top River Trips in Europe

Exploring Europe’s Hidden River Cruising Gems

Europe’s rivers have long been vital for trade and transportation, but in recent decades, they’ve also become popular destinations for leisure cruises. According to the latest data from the European industry group IG River Cruise, passenger numbers increased by 8% in 2024, with over 60 new ships set to launch in the next five years. While the Rhine and Upper Danube remain the most popular routes, there are numerous other waterways that offer equally captivating experiences.

Having spent over 15 years on cruises across the world, from the Norwegian Fjords to the Arctic, I’ve also taken a dozen river cruises in Europe. While I love the well-known routes, I’ve discovered that some of the most memorable experiences come from less-traveled waters. River cruises typically accommodate 80 to 180 guests and often provide good value, including full board, excursions, and entertainment. Here are some of my top picks for unique river cruising adventures.

Seine to the Sea

The Seine flows from just outside Dijon through Paris and into the picturesque countryside of Normandy, eventually reaching the English Channel. CroisiEurope offers an itinerary that begins in Paris and ends in the charming coastal town of Honfleur. Along the way, you’ll visit Giverny to explore the home of Claude Monet, tour the medieval city of Rouen, and see Château Gaillard, perched high above the river.

A seven-night Seine Valley cruise starts at £1,462 per person, available at croisieurope.co.uk.

Floral Netherlands

The Netherlands is known for its intricate network of rivers, canals, and polders, as well as its famous tulip fields. Saga’s spring cruise takes travelers through the Keukenhof Gardens, where millions of flowers bloom from March to May. The journey includes stops in Arnhem, the setting for the film A Bridge Too Far, and a canal cruise through Amsterdam.

The five-night Keukenhof Gardens and Highlights of Holland cruise departs on 3 April 2027, starting at £1,536 per person, available at travel.saga.co.uk.

Ride the Rhône

France’s Rhône River stretches from Lyon to the Mediterranean, offering access to a range of historical and cultural sites. The route includes Lyon’s Notre-Dame Basilica, the Ardèche gorges, and Arles, where Van Gogh once painted and a Roman amphitheatre stands. Riviera Travel offers a one-week cruise between Lyon and Avignon, featuring guided tours and wine tastings.

The Burgundy, Rhone & Provence cruise departs on 19 October, starting at £2,349 per person, available at rivieratravel.co.uk/river-cruises.

Andalucian Adventure

Gliding along the marshes of Doñana National Park in southern Spain, this cruise reveals how much of Europe remains untouched and serene. CroisiEurope’s trip starts and ends in Seville, sailing along the Guadalquivir River to Cadiz, a coastal city known for its golden-domed cathedral. The journey also includes a short sea voyage and visits to Vejer de la Frontera and Seville.

The five-night Amazing Andalucia cruise departs on 5 November, starting at £1,205 per person, available at croisieurope.co.uk.

Delights of the Douro

Portugal’s Douro River offers a breathtaking journey through deep valleys lined with terraced vineyards. Travelmarvel’s cruise begins and ends in Porto, stopping at villages like Lamego and offering a meal in a historic quinta. A highlight is a coach excursion to Salamanca in Spain.

The seven-night Douro Discovery cruise departs on 29 October, starting at £2,595 per person, available at travelmarvel.com.

The Lower Danube

While most Danube cruises focus on the western section between Germany and Budapest, fewer explore the lower reaches of Hungary and the Black Sea. This route includes Belgrade’s fortress, the Iron Gates gorge, and Rousse’s elegant architecture. Emerald offers an eight-night cruise from Budapest to Bucharest, providing a premium experience with fewer excursions.

The Enchantment of Eastern Europe cruise departs on 23 April 2027, starting at £2,822 per person, available at emerald.cruises.

The Elbe Through Germany

Often overlooked by cruisers, the Elbe River rises in the Czech Republic and flows through Germany to the North Sea. Key stops include Dresden’s Zwinger palace, Wittenburg’s colorful houses, Meissen’s gothic spires, and the Bastei sandstone cliffs. Viking’s itinerary also includes Potsdam’s palaces and hotel stays in Prague and Berlin.

The nine-night Elegant Elbe cruise departs on 25 March 2027, starting at £3,495 per person, including flights, available at vikingrivercruises.co.uk.
