Zohran Mamdani Demands King Return Kohinoor to India

A Call for the Return of the Koh-i-Noor Diamond

New York City’s mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has made a notable statement regarding the return of the Koh-i-Noor diamond to India. During a recent event in the city, which marked the anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks, Mamdani expressed his belief that if he had a private conversation with King Charles, he would encourage the monarch to return the historic gemstone.

The royal couple, King Charles and Queen Camilla, were in New York as part of their four-day state visit to the United States. They attended a ceremony at the National 9/11 Memorial in lower Manhattan, where the King laid flowers in tribute to the victims of the tragic event.

Mamdani addressed the media before the event, stating, “If I were to speak to the king separately from that, I’d probably encourage him to return the Koh-i-noor diamond.” The Koh-i-Noor, one of the largest-cut diamonds in the world, has a long and complex history tied to India. It is believed to have been mined in India and dates back to at least the 17th century. Since India’s independence in 1947, the Indian government has repeatedly requested its return from Britain.

Once owned by Queen Victoria, the diamond is currently part of the British Crown Jewels and is displayed in the Tower of London. It is considered priceless and has been the subject of much historical debate.

In 1849, during India’s colonial rule, the British East India Company forced the 10-year-old son of an Indian royal family to relinquish ownership of the Koh-i-Noor. India’s most recent formal request for the diamond was in 2016.

During the event, Mamdani was asked about any message he would like to send to the royal couple at Ground Zero. However, in his initial response, he omitted any mention of the royal couple, focusing instead on the wreath-laying ceremony honoring the victims of the 9/11 attacks.

“I’ll be attending a wreath laying alongside other elected officials including Gov Hochul, Gov Sherrill, and the focus of that wreath-laying is to honour the more than 3,000 New Yorkers who were killed in the horrific terror attacks of September 11,” he said. “And that is really what I’m looking to do at that event.”

A spokesperson for the royal family did not respond to Mamdani’s remarks, according to Politico. The Independent has also sought comments from Buckingham Palace.

Political Neutrality and International Relations

Earlier this week, Buckingham Palace responded to claims made by former President Donald Trump, who suggested that King Charles agreed with him that Iran should not be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon. Members of the royal family are constitutionally required to remain neutral on political matters. However, Trump claimed that the King shared his view on Iran’s nuclear program.

“Charles agrees with me even more than I do,” Trump stated. In his own comments later, the King did not address the issue of Iran or the broader conflict in the region.

A Palace spokesperson responded: “The King is naturally mindful of his government’s long-standing and well-known position on the prevention of nuclear proliferation.”
