The sudden passing of Cathy MacGuinness, a 40-year-old mother of three, has left her family and friends in deep sorrow. She died just five weeks after giving birth to her third child, Goldie, due to an undiagnosed heart condition that was only discovered too late.
Cathy was rushed to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital on Easter Sunday after suffering a cardiac arrest at home. She spent nearly three weeks in an induced coma before passing away surrounded by her loved ones on Saturday night. Her partner, Sebastian, and their three children—Zoe, Rosie, and Goldie—continue to mourn her loss.

They believe that had Cathy been diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy earlier, she might still be alive today. This rare condition causes the heart to enlarge and struggle to pump blood effectively, often without obvious symptoms.
“Cathy’s death could have been avoided,” said Gillian Binchy-MacGuinness, Cathy’s sister-in-law, in an interview with Daily Mail. “As a mum myself, we often put our families ahead of ourselves and our health by not listening to our bodies.”
She emphasized that many women overlook minor symptoms, thinking they are simply tired or busy. “Our hope is that Cathy’s story has a silver lining and saves lives.”
Symptoms to Watch For
Dilated cardiomyopathy can present with several symptoms, including:
- Fatigue
- Shortness of breath during activity or while lying flat
- Swelling in the legs, ankles, or abdomen
- Palpitations, dizziness, chest pain, and reduced exercise capacity
Cathy, who was described as a dedicated mother and successful professional, often dismissed her symptoms as part of being a busy mum. “She put her symptoms down to being a busy mum who was always on her feet,” said Ms Binchy-MacGuinness.
Her family hopes that by sharing her story, others will take their health more seriously and seek medical advice when something feels off.

Cathy was known for her warmth, kindness, and ability to bring joy to those around her. Friends and family remember her as “magic in human form,” someone who lit up every room she walked into.
Her hospital room was filled with art, photos, messages, and origami from everyone who loved her as she took her final breaths. Close friend Joanna Allen shared a touching tribute on GoFundMe: “She had this rare and extraordinary ability to really see you—to look at you and make you feel truly known, exactly as you are.”
Cathy was also admired for her determination and success in her career. She worked with major companies such as Microsoft, the Commonwealth Bank, and aerospace firm Alauda. However, it was her family that brought her the most joy.
“Seb and her girls were her entire world, her greatest love, her proudest achievement, her reason for everything,” said Ms Allen. “And beyond that, her love stretched wide and deep—to her mum and dad, her brothers and sister, and all of their families.”
A Family in Need of Support
Like many families, Cathy and Sebastian did not have life insurance, believing they had plenty of time ahead of them. Their unexpected loss has left them in financial hardship, prompting a fundraiser to help support them.
The GoFundMe campaign has already raised over $130,000 within three days of launching. The funds will help cover medical expenses, funeral costs, and ongoing support for the family.
