Honda reveals new sedan amid annual loss and 2040 EV goal shift

Honda Unveils Two Concept Cars for 2028 Production

At a recent briefing, Honda revealed two concept cars that are set to go into production by 2028. These vehicles mark a significant shift in the company’s strategy as it moves away from its previous electric vehicle (EV) ambitions and focuses more on hybrid technology.

The Honda Hybrid Sedan Prototype features a fastback design but is actually a sedan. At first glance, it resembles the next-generation Accord, but reports suggest that the current model’s lifespan will be extended, with the new Accord now expected to launch in early 2030. In contrast, the Civic needs an earlier replacement, as the current generation was introduced in 2021, while the 11th-generation Accord dates back to 2023.

Despite its larger appearance, the Hybrid Sedan Prototype doesn’t look small. An earlier engineering prototype suggested that the new Civic will be longer and wider than today’s model.

Acura Hybrid SUV Prototype

The Acura Hybrid SUV Prototype gives a clearer idea of what to expect, as it appears to be a replacement for the Acura RDX. The current RDX model debuted in 2019, and historically, the RDX and Civic have shared the same platform and size. Both prototypes, along with their production versions, are based on a new platform designed to be flexible and accommodate Honda’s next-generation petrol-electric hybrid technology.

Strategic Shifts in Honda’s Plans

Honda has made several strategic changes, including cancelling its 0 Series Saloon and SUV and the Acura RSX in March, just months before they were due to enter production. Shortly after, the company also decided to stop producing the Afeela models it planned to build with Sony.

The automaker now aims to launch 15 new hybrid models, primarily in North America, by 2030. Some of the larger vehicles will be powered by a new V6 hybrid setup. Honda plans to repurpose its joint-venture factory with LG Energy Solution to produce battery packs for these new hybrid cars.

Focus on Electric Vehicles in Specific Markets

Although Honda has scaled back its EV ambitions, it still intends to launch electric cars mainly in the mini-vehicle (kei car) category in Japan. Additionally, plug-in hybrids and EVs will be built on platforms provided by local partners for the Chinese market.

While Honda is enthusiastic about its plans for affordable sub-4m models in India, it notably did not mention the 0 Series Alpha SUV, which is scheduled to go into production in India in 2027.

Commitment to Carbon Neutrality

Honda remains committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. However, its previous goal of stopping the production of internal combustion engine vehicles by 2040 has been abandoned. Instead, the company plans to reach its 2050 target through a “multi-faceted approach” that includes EVs, hybrid vehicles, carbon-neutral fuels, and carbon-offset technologies.

Financial Challenges

On the financial front, Honda reported an operating loss of ¥414.3 billion (A$3.6bn) for the year ending March 2026. This marks a significant turnaround from the previous year, when the company made a profit of ¥1.2 trillion (A$10.6bn). A majority of this loss comes from costs associated with cancelling its North American EV plans.

Future Outlook

Despite the challenges, Honda is looking ahead with a focus on hybrid technology and strategic partnerships. The company’s new direction reflects a broader industry trend towards sustainable and efficient mobility solutions. As it continues to navigate the evolving automotive landscape, Honda’s commitment to innovation and environmental responsibility remains central to its future plans.
