BYD M9 People Mover Set for Australia Launch in 2026

BYD M9 People Mover Set for Australian Launch

BYD, the Chinese automotive giant, has received official approval to introduce its plug-in hybrid people mover, the M9, to the Australian market. This move is expected to bring the vehicle to showrooms by the end of this year, positioning it as a direct competitor to the popular Kia Carnival.

The M9 is a 5.1-metre-long vehicle that offers seven seats, slightly fewer than the eight found in the Kia Carnival. It comes with two performance levels, making it a versatile option for families and individuals alike. The expansion of BYD’s product line from four models to 11 in just two years highlights the company’s ambition to climb the sales charts in Australia.

Expansion into Family People Movers

BYD has not only expanded its range across various vehicle types, including SUVs, utes, hatchbacks, sedans, and wagons but has also set its sights on capturing a share of the family people mover market. The M9 represents this strategic shift, aiming to appeal to consumers looking for a reliable and efficient vehicle for family use.

While the vehicle has not yet been officially confirmed for sale, the approval documents and sightings of the M9 on Australian roads, including in Sydney, suggest that its arrival is imminent. Although the exact pricing has not been announced, it is expected to be competitive with the Kia Carnival, which starts at $56,100 and goes up to $76,630, plus on-road costs.

Strategic Targeting of the Market

BYD Australia Chief Operating Officer Stephen Collins hinted at the Carnival being the main target for the M9. He mentioned that while the company has filled out its lineup in the last six months, there are still opportunities to grow. The people mover segment, dominated by the Carnival, presents a stable and lucrative market for BYD to enter.

“We think the people mover segment is another opportunity for us. It’s a relatively small [segment], but [there’s] one dominant player, relatively stable. That’s something we’re looking at in the second half [of 2026].”

Technical Specifications and Performance

The M9 is a plug-in hybrid equipped with a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, an electric motor, and power outputs of 191kW and 218kW. In overseas markets, the M9 is rated at 200kW/315Nm, offering battery packs of 20.4kWh or 36.6kWh for claimed electric driving ranges of 95km and 170km, respectively. In hybrid mode, these ranges increase to 945km and 1000km.

Standard fit with seven seats, the M9 is larger than the Carnival and features more traditional ‘MPV’ styling compared to the SUV-inspired design of the Kia. While it is yet to be confirmed if the M9 will retain its name in Australia, the presence of the branding in homologation documents suggests it will likely keep the M9 moniker rather than adopting a word-based badge like Atto 1, Sealion 8, or Shark 6.

Competition and Market Positioning

The M9’s plug-in hybrid powertrain and new name will differentiate it from Denza’s upcoming D9, a more luxurious electric people mover priced from $85,990 to $95,990, plus on-road costs. Another competitor in the market is GAC, which has launched Australia’s other plug-in hybrid people mover, currently known as the M8.

Future Outlook

As BYD continues to expand its presence in the Australian market, the introduction of the M9 marks a significant step forward. With its focus on family-oriented vehicles and competitive pricing, the M9 is well-positioned to challenge established players like the Kia Carnival. The company’s commitment to innovation and quality is evident in its growing product lineup, and the M9 is a testament to its ambitions in the Australian automotive landscape.
