Giants Consider ‘Mini Pre-Season’ for Injured Star

Jesse Hogan’s Injury Concerns and GWS’s Strategic Decisions

Jesse Hogan, a key player for the GWS Giants, may miss up to three more games due to an ongoing injury. The 31-year-old forward is currently dealing with a corked hip, which has prevented him from traveling to Optus Stadium for the upcoming match against West Coast. This development comes as the 13th-placed Giants prepare for their clash against the 15th-placed Eagles this Sunday.

Initially, Hogan was expected to be sidelined for just one week following his participation in the Giants’ comeback win over Essendon. However, coach Adam Kingsley has indicated that the 2024 Coleman Medallist hasn’t yet proven his fitness in time for the first of two Sir Doug Nicholls Round fixtures. With three more games scheduled before the team’s round-13 bye, the decision on Hogan’s return remains under review.

“He’s still feeling it a little bit, so we just assess week on week,” Kingsley said regarding Hogan. “The discussions are, do we bring him back in when he’s ready? Or do we give him a little bit of time out and let him do a bit of a mini pre-season, and we see him post-bye? We’ll make a call soon enough.”

Hogan was one of four players forced to sit out the recent game against the Bombers. Xavier O’Halloran (ankle), Leek Aleer (ankle), and Ryan Angwin (concussion) also missed the match. However, the Giants are set to welcome back winger Angwin as they prepare to celebrate Harvey Thomas’s 50th game.

Kingsley has already started thinking about potential backline selections, particularly with Sam Taylor, a two-time All-Australian defender, expected to make his season debut. Taylor suffered a high-grade hamstring strain while playing for Western Australia during State of Origin in February, leaving a spot open for recruit Jayden Laverde.

“He’ll do another full week of main train next week and hopefully be available,” Kingsley said. “He’ll obviously find his way in the team when he’s ready to play. That may hopefully be next week, but it might not be. I’ve been pleased with Jayden. He was outstanding last week. It’ll be interesting to see how we try and piece together that backline.”

Key Players and Team Dynamics

Small forward Darcy Jones, who is recovering from an ACL injury, has made significant progress and is expected to return in the latter half of the season. Meanwhile, veteran Josh Kelly, who is dealing with a hip issue, is still some way off from training.

In Hogan’s absence, young forward Max Gruzewski stepped up and kicked two goals against the Bombers. Jake Riccardi, who replaced Leek Aleer, also managed to score two goals. Kingsley praised the team’s ability to operate effectively regardless of who is in the lineup.

“Our forward line operates irrespective of who’s in it for the most part,” Kingsley said. “We want to try and win them all (before the bye). It doesn’t always work out in our favour, but we prepare really well, we expect to play well.”
